Janice will discuss how a transformative dream during an artist residency in Sweden inspired her book\, Bloom: On Becoming an Artist Later in Life. \nJanice will share her journey of becoming an artist and explore how creativity can flourish as we age. Her book combines personal anecdotes with the stories of 138 artists\, offering a fresh perspective on how art and aging can positively intersect. Discover how older artists can leverage their experiences and embrace creativity to renew their sense of purpose and joy. \nNo registration required; all are welcome. Attendees will also have the chance to purchase an autographed copy of Bloom.

SUMMARY:The Literature and Libraries of L.M. Montgomery
DESCRIPTION:Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) published 20 novels and many short stories in her lifetime\, most notably\, the Anne of Green Gables series. To celebrate and to mark the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of L.M. Montgomery\, the McLaughlin Library at the University of Guelph is contributing digital images from the author’s private library to The Lucy Maud Montgomery Bookshelf\, a project based at the University of Prince Edward Island’s L.M. Montgomery Institute. \nPlease join us as Dr. Emily Woster from the College of St. Scholastica and curator of The L.M. Montgomery Bookshelf Project speaks about L.M. Montgomery as a lifelong reader\, re-reader\, bibliophile\, and a self-professed “book drunkard.” Dr. Woster will discuss the wealth of evidence Montgomery left of her reading–in journals\, scrapbooks\, letters\, and in her fiction–reflecting both her tastes as a reader and her place in literary history. \nAshley Shifflett McBrayne from the University of Guelph’s Archival & Special Collections will also speak about the state of the L.M. Montgomery Collection at Guelph\, and about working with L.M. Montgomery’s private library\, elaborating on what we know about the library\, what we don’t know\, and some of the interesting physical characteristics of these books including their annotations\, inscriptions\, and inserted materials. \nThis hybrid event is open to everyone and was made possible with a grant from the Bibliographical Society of America. As scientists\, politicians and concerned citizens scramble for solutions to the catastrophic effects of a warming world\, is it time to explore the controversial topic of geoengineering? Intervention Earth is built around Dyer’s interviews with one hundred climate scientists from around the globe\, including the leading figures in the geoengineering field. But Intervention Earth is about more than technological mega-projects. Dyer devotes ample space to the many innovative ideas on offer\, but there is no get-out-of-jail-free card. In his talk\, Dyer outlines a whole portfolio of techniques and technologies—and a lot of hard\, thankless work— that will be needed to keep the planet hospitable for humanity.

SUMMARY:Breaking knowledge hegemony through transdisciplinary research practice
DESCRIPTION:Marsha Hinds Myrie will be presenting the next One Health seminar on Wednesday\, November 13. Marsha is an Educational Developer\, Anti-oppressive and Inclusive Pedagogies in the Office of Teaching and Learning at the University of Guelph. \nMarsha Hinds Myrie’s life and work are an embodiment of dualities and intersections. She is a Barbadian/Canadian citizen with an ancestral\, cultural\, and intellectual home in Africa. Her career unfolds\, sometimes spectacularly and sometimes confusingly\, at the intersections of activism and education. She is a public intellectual steeped in the Caribbean intellectual tradition and critical studies. \nMarsha spent 23 years developing an advocacy model to address the issues of underprivileged groups of women in Barbados and the Commonwealth Caribbean. The major focus of the work is to develop and encourage the use of victim-defined services for women and girls affected by various types of gender-based violence while at the same time removing the burden of eradicating violence from women and victims by forcing greater attention to systemic oppression and a stronger lobby in policy spaces.

SUMMARY:On Cuddling: Loved to Death in the Racial Embrace—Reading and Conversation with Dr. Phanuel Antwi (UBC)
DESCRIPTION:Ranging from the terrifying embrace of the slave ship’s hold to the racist encoding of ‘cuddly’ toys\, On Cuddling is a unique combination of essay and poetry that contends with the way racial violence is enacted through intimacy. Informed by Black feminist and queer poetics\, Antwi focuses his lens on the suffering of Black people at the hands of state violence and racial capitalism. As radical movements grow to advance Black liberation\, so too must our ways of understanding how racial capitalism embraces us all. Antwi turns to cuddling\, an act we imagine as devoid of violence\, and explores it as a tense transfer point of power. \nDr. Phanuel Antwi is the Canada Research Chair in Black Arts and Epistemologies in the Department of English Language and Literatures at the University of British Columbia. He is an artist\, teacher and organizer concerned with race\, poetics\, movements\, intimacy\, and struggle. He works with text\, dance\, film\, and photography to intervene in artistic\, academic\, and public spaces. He is a curator\, activist\, and associate professor. SUMMARY:Bigger Picture Series: Indigenous Entrepreneurship
DESCRIPTION:The Bigger Picture Series is the Wood Centre’s Flagship event where we bring guest speakers to campus to tackle challenges or innovative topics within industry to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs. This semester\, we are diving into the topic of Indigenous Entrepreneurship. For the workshop component\, we will be creating custom dot-art based on Métis floral beadwork patterns fused with drawing inspiration from plant relations. This workshop will be led by Marissa Magneson. All materials will be provided for the workshop. \nStudents are also welcome to stay after the workshop into the evening\, which will feature a keynote presentation by Jenn Harper\, founder of Cheekbone Beauty. Jenn will share her journey in building a cosmetic company focused on representation and inclusion. The lecture titled “Agriculture and Food: Careers to Solve Global Challenges” will showcase how students and professionals in agri-food can help shape a sustainable and resilient food future. \nExclusive student career networking session: U of G students are invited to attend an exclusive networking session with Justine and her FCC team\, following her talk. Explore careers in FCC and connect with OAC alumni and managers. The networking session is from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. \nAbout Justine Hendricks: In January 2023\, Justine was appointed to serve as Farm Credit Canada (FCC)’s president and CEO after 17 years with Export Development Canada (EDC) and 7 years with Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). She is FCC’s first woman and person of colour to serve in that role. She is an energetic and impactful leader whose known for her ambition and down-to-earth style. Justine earned an MBA from the University of Ottawa and a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies from Carleton University. \nHosted by the U of G’s Ontario Agricultural College\, the Future Thinker Speaker Series brings together leading experts\, changemakers and thought leaders to explore the future of innovation in food\, agriculture\, the environment\, and communities.
