SUMMARY:Walking as Remapping | Marking Time: Tour of the Old Stone Quarry Site at the Guelph Correctional Centre
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk and conversation with AGG Director Shauna McCabe and researcher and past chair of Heritage Guelph\, Brian Skerrett\, as they discuss the layered histories at play in Guelph\, with a focus on the site of the stone quarry on the grounds of the Guelph Correctional Centre (Ontario Reformatory). This dialogue will delve into the connections between geologies and geographies as well as between natural and built environments. \nWorked by those incarcerated at the Reformatory\, not only does the stone quarry expose layers of rock that reveal the earth’s stratigraphy and fossil records\, in this case a prehistoric reef\, the quarries became part of the cultural landscape as materials extracted were used to build local architecture\, influencing the aesthetic and structural characteristics of the region. \nThis tour is presented in conjunction with the AGG’s recent exhibition Yours in Native Spirit: Richard Bedwash\, curated by Shauna McCabe and Colinda Clyne\, as the Anishinaabe artist served a term there in the 1970s\, part of the intricate narrative that connects his work\, his life\, and the city of Guelph. \nNote that to access this site\, participants must walk over uneven ground for approximately 15 minutes and there are no washroom facilities on the site. In the case of extreme weather\, this walk will be rescheduled and any changes will be communicated by email to those registered. \nPartners\nPresented by the Art Gallery of Guelph as part of AGG’s Walking as Remapping program with the support of the University of Guelph’s Wellness@Work program\, in partnership with the Department of Geography and School of English and Theatre Studies.

SUMMARY:One Health Seminar with CERC Chair Dr. David McCarthy
DESCRIPTION:The title of Dr. McCarthy’s seminar is “Using a One Health Approach to Understanding and Mitigating Risks to Swimmers.“ \nDavid McCarthy leads a multidisciplinary team of researchers from the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (CEPS)\, the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) and the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC).  The team aims to understand how pathogens from human and animal waste move through urban water cycles\, how they interact with humans and how to reduce the health risks they pose. \nTo do this\, McCarthy’s lab is developing novel technologies to detect pathogens and their sources in near real-time\, designing a “lab-on-a-chip” device to enable pathogen detection in the field\, and modelling how humans interact with sources of contamination and reduce pathogen loads in the environment. McCarthy’s team emphasizes solutions that are easy to use\, low cost\, open source and open hardware\, to encourage and enable their use in all parts of the globe.

SUMMARY:Hopper Lecture 2024 - Restless Earth
DESCRIPTION:In this talk Nanjala Nyabola gives insight and stimulates thought around the language and metrics that will define our digital future. As our world becomes increasingly digital\, digital-rights advocates often struggle to convey rapid technological changes to those who need to understand them quickly to protect themselves. The Internet now dominates our public lives\, and governments worldwide are adopting a “digital first” approach. After years of widespread belief in the Internet’s benefits\, activists are now questioning how commercial and political interests are shaping it\, often at the expense of community values like inclusion and trust.

SUMMARY:Reasoning and Artificial Intelligence: A Talk by Dr. Mariam Thalos
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Humanities Interdisciplinary Collaboration (THINC) Lab for the first Digital Humanities at Guelph\, DH@Guelph\, talk of the 2024/2025 academic year. We welcome Dr. Mariam Thalos\, visiting as the Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Digital Humanities\, to the University of Guelph. All are welcome! Refreshments will be provided. \nAbstract: The concept of intelligence is difficult to get one’s arms around. Does it consist in the capacity for strategy? Thought? Planning? Reasoning? Surprisingly\, there is no standout philosophical account even of the notion of reasoning. This talk aims at shedding some light on certain aspects of human reasoning – reasoning for practical life. This will put us in a better position to make some comparisons between (some aspects of) human reasoning and what Large Language Models (LLMs) are doing – they look to be doing quite different things. \nBio: Dr. Mariam Thalos is the Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Digital Humanities at the University of Guelph. A Distinguished Professor at the University of Tennessee since 2018\, she is a philosopher of science with a broad spectrum of interests in the physical\, decisional\, and human sciences. Her forthcoming book with Routledge is entitled “Reasoning in the Wild”. \nImage Description: Digital Humanities at Guelph presents…Mariam Thalos.
