Please join us at this workshop and learn to identify and understand our native Ontario species of snakes. We will cover their habits\, ranges and habitats. \nLive specimens will be available to provide opportunities to interact with some of our native snake species. This hands-on experience is a safe and fun way to get up close and personal with types of snakes that could be encountered in the wild in our province. DESCRIPTION:The Experiential Learning Development and Recognition team is excited to share that Corey Wood\, our part-time staff member for the past year\, has kindly agreed to present a final showcase about two key projects she has spearheaded during our time with us. These topics may be of interest to the larger faculty and staff community\, so we are opening up the invitation to anyone who would like to attend! \nFrom 11 am -11:30 am\, Corey will be joined by Lilli Porter from the Office of Quality Assurance to share about their incredible achievements with launching the Student Research Network Discord community\, which has now grown to almost 500 students! Hear more about what a Discord community is as well as Corey and Lilli’s successes and challenges with launching this space and keeping students engaged year-round. \nFrom 11:30 am-12 pm\, Corey will be discussing an overview of the experiential learning accessibility project\, which included completing a literature review\, key informant interviews with campus partners\, and facilitating student focus groups. DESCRIPTION:Ponds teem with a diversity of prey and predators that conduct their lives largely unseen below the surface. The online portion of this workshop will introduce you to some of these fascinating animals. The importance of vernal pools will be highlighted. These temporary ponds are crucial to the reproductive success of various creatures including wood frogs\, fairy shrimp and spotted salamanders. The ecological value of permanent ponds will also be addressed. \nDon Scallen has written about vernal pools for ON Nature and Escarpment Views magazines and since 2001 he has been the primary nature writer for In The Hills magazine. In 2020 he published Nature Where We Live\, Activities to Engage Your Inner Scientist from Pond Dipping to Animal Tracking. \nLearn more and register. A Large water bottle or jug with lid is perfect *You don’t need to have special portable or hand held supplies for painting\, but try and think about how you will set up outside and manage your supplies. We will talk about set up ideas\, but keep in mind you will need to be able to hold your palette while painting\, or have a small foldable table\, chair or tray to set things on. DESCRIPTION:Do you love trees but can’t tell an ash from a walnut\, a birch from a beech\, or a spruce from a fir? Are you looking to connect more with the natural world around you? Join Shelley Hunt\, U of G course instructor and former director of the Arboretum\, for a virtual\, interactive tree identification workshop. Over the course of four Zoom sessions\, with hands-on challenges to complete in between\, you will learn the basics of tree identification\, with a focus on native Ontario species (and their look-alike non-native counterparts). You will learn about the important features to look for (e.g. leaf shape and arrangement\, bark characteristics\, fruits and cones)\, as well as the details that help us to distinguish between species in the same group (e.g. ashes\, pines \,maples). You will practice your skills on trees that you can find in your local area\, and get feedback on your ‘homework’. The fourth session will include a virtual tour of trees in The Arboretum’s collections. Sessions will run from 8 p.m. – 9 p.m. (one hour of instruction\, and up to 30 minutes of optional questions/discussion) on Tuesdays from June 6 to 27. \nPlease Note: This course is online. A separate in-person course is also available on July 7.\nFee: $50 (plus HST) per person.

Make Yoga Part of Your Life. \nJoin the U of G community on Wednesday\, June 21\, 12 p.m. -1:30 p.m.\, to celebrate the United Nations International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2023 and realize the many benefits of yoga- mental\, physical\, social\, environmental\, and spiritual. IDY is the biggest yoga event of the year and is celebrated throughout the world on the summer solstice\, June 21. All are welcome at this inclusive event. \nThe IDY event will be celebrated in nature under the open sky on the historic and picturesque Johnston Green. The event will start with an hour of yoga practice\, including asanas\, pranayama (yogic breathing)\, meditation\, mudras\, and relaxation. The practice will invigorate and relax you while bringing a sense of calm\, peace\, and overall well-being in mental and physical dimensions. \nThe yoga practice will be followed by lunch and open mic from 1 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. where anyone can share their yoga and mental health story or experience. \nBring your own nutritious and healthy lunch\, yoga mat\, and water bottle. Chairs will be provided for yoga postures adaptation. \nThe resolution for the International Day of Yoga was proposed by India and endorsed by a record 175 member states through a UN resolution. Yoga is now practiced worldwide\, giving people of all faiths and walks of life the tools and practices they need to enhance and balance their mental\, physical\, and spiritual well-being. \nNational Indigenous Peoples Day also takes place on the summer solstice\, June 21. \nRegister through Qualtrics\nThis event is sponsored by Wellness@Work\, U of G\, and presented by the U of G Yoga and Meditation Collective and the U of G Yoga Club.
