SUMMARY:Women in Indian Films\, Media and Beyond: Representations and Aesthetics
DESCRIPTION:With Dr. Aysha Iqbal Viswamohan\, Professor\, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences\, IIT Madras\, India. \nThe talk will explore representation of women in Indian media and what image of a contemporary Indian woman is formed in films\, over-the-top (OTT) platforms and social media\, particularly in post “MeToo” times. It will follow up on key ideas and themes discussed at the two-day online conference in 2021\, “Towards a New Vision: Women in Films\, Media & Beyond\,” which featured 20 gender studies and media studies experts. The conference was co-organized by IIT Madras and the University of Guelph with funding from the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. \nAysha Iqbal Viswamohan is a professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Madras. She works in the areas of Film Studies\, Popular Culture and American Literature. Her books include edited anthologies: Women Filmmakers in Hindi Cinema: Feminist Gaze and Beyond (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2023)\, Stardom in Contemporary Hindi Cinema: Celebrity and Fame in Globalized Times (Springer\, 2020)\, Behind the Scenes: Contemporary Bollywood Directors (Sage\, 2017) and Post-liberalization Indian Novels in English: Global Reception & Politics of Award (Anthem\, 2013). \nThis hybrid event is presented by CIRCLE\, the Canada India Research Centre for Learning and Engagement at the University of Guelph. \nAll are welcome. \nWe kindly ask in-person and virtual attendees to register to help us prepare for this event. \nLearn more online.

DESCRIPTION:The Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Office and the SAFE (Sexual Assault Free Environment) Peer Team* invites you to participate in We Believe You Day. \nOn Sept. 20\, the University of Guelph is joining campuses across Ontario to participate in #WeBelieveYou Day to raise awareness about sexual and gender-based violence and to show solidarity with survivors. On #WeBelieveYou day\, we will commit to one simple idea: when a survivor of sexual assault discloses\, we say we believe them. \nHistorically\, survivors have been afraid to disclose experiences of sexual and gender-based violence for fear of not being believed or blamed. It’s one of many reasons why only 6% of sexual assaults are reported to law enforcement in Canada (Statistics Canada\, 2019). That number is strikingly low when statistics illustrate that 1 in 3 women\, 1 in 2 trans/non-binary people and 1 in 6 men experiencing sexual abuse/assault in their lifetime. Students are disproportionately impacted by sexual violence and an estimated 70% have experienced or witnessed unwanted sexual behaviours at a post-secondary institution (Statistics Canada\, 2020). \n#WeBelieveYou Day recognizes that in order to make an integral shift to create cultures of consent on campus\, the whole community must participate in fostering an environment where survivors feel safe and blameless when coming forward to report incidents of sexual assault. \nOn We Believe You Day\, we will unite students\, staff\, faculty and community members in showing public support for survivors through our words and actions in an effort to make our campus and community safer for everyone. \nHow can you participate:\nJoin us to show your support for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence on #WeBelieveYou Day by: \n\nVisiting Johnston Green between 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to learn more about sexual violence supports and education on campus and to write your own letter to survivors to be displayed on campus.\nCreating a post or video of what #WeBelieveYou day means to you to post on social media tagging #WeBelieveYou and @wellness_uofg.\nReaching out to Jensen\, the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Education Coordinator (jwilli20@uoguelph.ca)\, to inquire about education and training opportunities available for you to learn more about how to provide supportive responses to disclosures of sexual assault.\nSharing information with your office\, department\, club or group about #WeBelieveYou day and encourage them to participate.\n\n*The SAFE Peer team is a student-led peer team who focuses on developing and delivering sexual and gender-based violence prevention and education initiatives

This year’s novel is Home of the Floating Lily\, by Bangladeshi-Canadian author and lawyer\, Silmy Abdullah. This collection of eight short stories follows the lives of everyday people as they navigate the complexities of migration\, displacement\, love\, friendship and familial conflict. \nGryphons Read is a campus-wide book club that brings the University community together over a selected novel and encourages meaningful conversations about the book. Lead by Student Experience\, individual residence and off-campus book clubs are organized and coordinated with discussion group facilitators and a tailored discussion guide with input from the author herself. DESCRIPTION:Taking regular breaks during the workday can help you de-stress and re-charge. Stop by Brass Taps or the OVC Cafeteria between 9:30 and 11 a.m. for a free hot beverage. An assortment of delicious snacks will also be available! Bring along your colleagues. This opportunity is available for all U of G employees. The Take Your Break event is not just about recognizing our staff and faculty for all the amazing things they do by providing them free drinks and snacks.
