So make sure you put on your detective cap at the start of this hike! \nGuelph Urban Forest Friends (GUFF): Henry Kock Award for Tree Stewardship\nSept. 10 from noon to 1 p.m.\nWest Lawn\, Arboretum Gazebo\nThis year\, the Arboretum Expo will feature the Guelph Urban Forest Friends (GUFF): Henry Kock Award for Tree Stewardship presentation. \nPanel and Launch of Sound Walk- “How to Draw a Tree (Trees\, Mental Health\, Creativity)”\nSept. 10 from 1 to 2 p.m.\nArboretum Centre\nThis panel will be led by Dawn Matheson whose participatory art project brings individuals living with mental illnesses together with trees for a yearlong creative\, care-taking\, reciprocal engagement culminating in an immersive public sound walk. The work aims to reflect the parallel crisis of mental illness and the environmental crisis by expanding ideas around art and new media\, art practice as care\, and the interdependency between humans and our natural environment. This panel will present the site-specific sound walk on the grounds of the Arboretum\, plus the accessible web-based version created by artist Richelle Forsey. The team will also introduce the second phase of the project\, incorporating students in the How to Draw a Forest project. This event will be followed by a reciprocal tree planting on Johnston Green with Student Wellness.

SUMMARY:Women in Indian Films\, Media and Beyond: Representations and Aesthetics
DESCRIPTION:With Dr. Aysha Iqbal Viswamohan\, Professor\, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences\, IIT Madras\, India. \nThe talk will explore representation of women in Indian media and what image of a contemporary Indian woman is formed in films\, over-the-top (OTT) platforms and social media\, particularly in post “MeToo” times. It will follow up on key ideas and themes discussed at the two-day online conference in 2021\, “Towards a New Vision: Women in Films\, Media & Beyond\,” which featured 20 gender studies and media studies experts. The conference was co-organized by IIT Madras and the University of Guelph with funding from the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. \nAysha Iqbal Viswamohan is a professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Madras. She works in the areas of Film Studies\, Popular Culture and American Literature. Her books include edited anthologies: Women Filmmakers in Hindi Cinema: Feminist Gaze and Beyond (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2023)\, Stardom in Contemporary Hindi Cinema: Celebrity and Fame in Globalized Times (Springer\, 2020)\, Behind the Scenes: Contemporary Bollywood Directors (Sage\, 2017) and Post-liberalization Indian Novels in English: Global Reception & Politics of Award (Anthem\, 2013). \nThis hybrid event is presented by CIRCLE\, the Canada India Research Centre for Learning and Engagement at the University of Guelph. \nAll are welcome. \nWe kindly ask in-person and virtual attendees to register to help us prepare for this event. \nLearn more online.

DESCRIPTION:The Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Office and the SAFE (Sexual Assault Free Environment) Peer Team* invites you to participate in We Believe You Day. \nOn Sept. 20\, the University of Guelph is joining campuses across Ontario to participate in #WeBelieveYou Day to raise awareness about sexual and gender-based violence and to show solidarity with survivors. On #WeBelieveYou day\, we will commit to one simple idea: when a survivor of sexual assault discloses\, we say we believe them. \nHistorically\, survivors have been afraid to disclose experiences of sexual and gender-based violence for fear of not being believed or blamed. It’s one of many reasons why only 6% of sexual assaults are reported to law enforcement in Canada (Statistics Canada\, 2019). That number is strikingly low when statistics illustrate that 1 in 3 women\, 1 in 2 trans/non-binary people and 1 in 6 men experiencing sexual abuse/assault in their lifetime. This year\, whether you are joining us on Guelph campus or from further away\, we have something for you. \nOn campus\nMeet us at the Portico to walk\, run or roll one mile. This is a chance for you to engage in physical activity\, connect with colleagues\, take in the sights and sounds around you\, and enhance your mood. After your mile\, stick around to connect with colleagues\, enjoy some refreshments\, snap a photo with Gryph\, and spin the prize wheel. \nThe Campus Mile is also a drop-off location for your Employee Orientation Month Passport! The draw for the three grand prize packages will happen after the mile at around 12:30 p.m. \nIf you are joining us from home\, Ridgetown\, Guelph-Humber or a Research Station: \n\nStart your one mile walk\, run or roll anytime on October 3\nStart your own one mile (1.6 km) walk\, run or roll wherever you’re working from\nSnap a photo or short video on your one mile route to post once you finish your walk. This year’s theme is “confronting foodservice industry challenges through research and advocacy”. \nThe symposium will feature presentations by Emily Robinson and Rebecca Gordon of the University of Guelph and Kyla Tuori\, the Corporate Chef of Unilever and the Fair Kitchens Ambassador. \nEmily Robinson and Rebecca Gordon have spent the last two years conducting groundbreaking research on restaurant sustainability issues while completing their MSc. degrees and they look forward to sharing their findings with you. Emily Robinson will speak about how to overcome barriers to implement environmental sustainability initiatives. Rebecca Gordon will give a presentation on how the food service industry can eliminate extreme work conditions to retain restaurant workers. We are also excited to have Kyla Tuori joining us to share how Fair Kitchens is creating change in the industry through advocacy and education of fair employment practices. Fair Kitchens provides free tools\, support and training for foodservice and hospitality professionals to help build positive working environments. \nThis is a free\, virtual live event.
