SUMMARY:The Studio Art Lecture in Contemporary Art: Los Angeles-based Painter Tala Madani +
DESCRIPTION:On March 27 at 6 p.m.\, the College of Art’s Studio Art program will be hosting The Studio Art Lecture in Contemporary Art: Los Angeles-Based Painter Tala Madani + in War Memorial Hall. \nTala Madani (b. 1981\, Tehran\, Iran) makes paintings and animations whose images bring together wide-ranging modes of critique\, prompting reflection on gender\, political authority\, and questions of who and what gets represented in art. Her work is populated by mostly middle-aged men engaged in acts that push their bodies to their limits. Bodily fluids and beams of light emerge from their orifices\, generating metaphors for the tactile expressivity of paint. In Madani’s work\, slapstick humor is inseparable from violence and creation is synonymous with destruction\, reflecting a complex and gut-level vision of contemporary power imbalances of all kinds. Her approach to figuration combines the radical morphology of a modernist with a contemporary sense of sequencing\, movement\, and speed. Thus\, her work finds some of its most powerful echoes in cartoons\, cinema\, and other popular durational forms. \nTala Madani has been the subject of solo exhibitions at museums worldwide\, including The Museum of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles (2023); Start Museum\, Shanghai (2020); Mori Art Museum\, Tokyo (2019); Secession\, Vienna (2019); Portikus\, Frankfurt (2019); La Panacée\, Montpellier\, France (2017); MIT List Visual Arts Center\, Cambridge\, Massachusetts (2016); Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (2016); Nottingham Contemporary\, England (2014); and Moderna Museet\, Malmö and Moderna Museet\, Stockholm\, Sweden (2013). She participated in the 16th Istanbul Biennial: The Seventh Continent\, Istanbul\, Turkey (2019); Whitney Biennial 2017\, Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York; and Made in L.A. 2014\, Hammer Museum\, Los Angeles\, among many other international group exhibitions. Madani’s work is in the permanent collections of institutions including Moderna Museet\, Stockholm and Malmö\, Sweden; Guggenheim Museum\, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles; Museum of Modern Art\, New York; Stedelijk Museum\, Amsterdam; Tate Modern\, London; Mori Art Museum\, Tokyo; and Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York. Madani lives and works in Los Angeles.

SUMMARY:Live @ImprovLab: Susanna Hood Trio and Sarah Belle Reid
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Wednesday\, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. (ET) for the series premier of Live @ImprovLab\, featuring the Susanna Hood Trio and Sarah Belle Reid in an inspiring double bill. This performance hosted by the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI) will take place in person at ImprovLab\, MacKinnon 108 at the University of Guelph. \nTickets are $15 or pay what you can (by donation) and available online through IICSI’s Eventbrite page. While tickets will be made available at the door\, attendees are encouraged to reserve tickets ahead of time. \nThe double bill will be preceded by a panel discussion moderated by Marie Zimmerman in which the artists will contextualize the work they will be presenting\, and share insights about the role that improvisation plays in what they do. \nMore about the event:\nIICSI’s new Live @ImprovLab concert and performance series serves to showcase touring artists working in a variety of improvisatory idioms. Curated by IICSI Director Dr. Ajay Heble (Founder and former Artistic Director of the Guelph Jazz Festival and 2023 Killam Prize winner)\, the new series\, says Heble\,“aims to celebrate live improvised performances and to spotlight our beautiful new venue.” \nTiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montreal-based bandleader and vocalist-dancer\, Susanna Hood\, along with the superb Tkaronto/Toronto-based musicians\, Tania Gill (piano) and Kayla Milmine (soprano saxophone) bring poet Judith Malina and composer Steve Lacy’s 1995 “Packet” suite to life through sound and movement. These audacious new arrangements blur the lines between what is heard and what is seen. Heart-felt\, yet unsentimental\, these eight songs hold no punches as they bring voice to a woman’s later life\, grappling with imperfection\, sexism\, paradox\, grit\, beauty\, regret\, invisibility\, death\, and love. \nIn Sarah Belle Reid’s improvisations and compositions\, musical notation is often experimental and graphical—an invitation to explore a new sonic universe. This spirit for exploration has led her to collaborate with musicians and artists of all genres\, including experimental electronic musician David Rosenboom\, thereminist Carolina Eyck\, and baroque-pop artist Julia Holter. Reid recorded trumpet and electronics on Holter’s 2019 record Aviary\, and recently wrapped up an extensive tour throughout North America\, Europe\, and Australia as a member of her band. Reid’s own compositions have been premiered and performed by a number of renowned musicians\, most recently pianist Vicki Ray and trumpeter Nate Wooley. In 2017 her composition “Flux” for amplified percussion quartet won the Grammy-nominated Los Angeles Percussion Quartet’s Next Wave Composer Initiative.

SUMMARY:Big Ideas Lecture and Art Exhibition Launch: What Remains
DESCRIPTION:Launching the ArtsEverywhere festival organized and presented by Musagetes\, join the artists of the El Paso-based What Remains Collective (Dr. Adriana Alvarez\, Iris Morales\, Mabel Weber\, and Monica Lozano) for a guided conversation about documenting the stories of immigrant families as well as the belongings abandoned by individuals over the course of attempts to cross the political border into the United States. \nThe conversation will be followed by an opening reception at the Art Gallery of Guelph for the collective’s exhibition What Remains\, that brings together photography\, video\, and La Trenza – an evolving installation that braids together the belongings and stories of humans in transit\, immigrants\, asylum seekers\, displaced families\, men\, women\, and children who have experienced the journey of crossing a border\, from the heavily militarized to the nearly invisible. Representing individual experiences through the objects they carry with them\, this piece is made of materials recovered from the desert of Ciudad Juarez that were found half buried. \nImage detail: Monica Lozano\, The Cemetery\, 2022\, digital photograph. SUMMARY:Sensational Snakes of Ontario (In-person)
DESCRIPTION:Snakes are often misunderstood and maligned. We would love to change the negative perception of these animals by teaching the truth about them. Please join us at this workshop and learn to identify and understand our native Ontario species of snakes. We will cover their habits\, ranges and habitats. \nLive specimens will be available to provide opportunities to interact with some of our native snake species. This hands-on experience is a safe and fun way to get up close and personal with types of snakes that could be encountered in the wild in our province. Our captive bred specimens are lovely ambassadors for their kind. Each registrant that attends the workshop will receive a copy of our Reptile Identification Sheet. \n*Maximum 18 adults.\nFee: $64 (plus HST) per person if you register by the early bird deadline of April 25\, 2024. After April 25 the fee is $74 plus HST.
