DESCRIPTION:In winter’s frigid grasp\, insects\, spiders and other invertebrates seem to vanish from the surface of the earth. Knowing what to look for and where to find these hidden creatures make cold-weather expeditions far more enjoyable. \nDuring this half-day program\, we will search for goldenrod gallfly larvae and caterpillars that hide in burrs\, learn how woolly bears forecast the severity of winter’s blast\, and discover a great variety of other “bugs” that are surviving their most challenging season. Photographs\, hands-on bio-artifacts\, and especially outdoor exploration and discovery will allow participants to become familiar with our cold and spineless neighbours. \nPlease bring clothing and footwear for trekking in cold and hopefully snowy conditions. A hand lens would also be an asset if you already have one. \nGuest Instructor: Dan Schneider \nRegistration: \nEarly Bird Fee: $60 on or before Feb. 26. \nRegular Fee: $70 \nNote: If we don’t have enough registrations by the early bird deadline the course may be cancelled. DESCRIPTION:In celebration of International Women’s Day\, take in a noon-hour concert featuring Toronto-based R&B artist\, LIZA. \nLiza (pronounced Lee-za) is an R&B singer/songwriter. Born and raised in Toronto\, Liza grew up in a traditional Ethiopian household immersed with the Ethiopian musical culture. After beginning to play piano and write poems at the age of 11\, Liza’s passion for music grew throughout the years\, as well as her desire to create her own sounds. \nLiza released her debut EP\, titled February 29 in 2017 and received positive reviews from various music outlets globally. Most recently\, Liza released the first two singles off her upcoming sophomore project\, Here to Stay and Passes Me. Paired with strong vocals and progressive production\, Liza draws from a strong R&B/Neo-Soul culture\, while combining a modern and resonating feel to bring listeners to her raw and authentic reality. \nHaving performed at several notable musical festivals in Toronto such as\, uTOpia Music Fest\, Canadian Music Week\, Manifesto\, NXNE and performing as an opening for Lauryn Hill’s Toronto show this summer\, Liza has showcased her ability to captivate audiences with her soothing sounds and charismatic stage presence. DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to attend From Parchment to Pixels\, a colloquium sponsored by the McLaughlin Library\, the College of Arts and the Humanities Interdisciplinary Collaboration (THINC) Lab. \nThe colloquium will provide a forum for discussion on the role books played in the medieval world and the world of today. University of Guelph history and art history students will present their research on medieval manuscripts in the “Manuscripts in the Curriculum II”* loan and other encounters with medieval books. \n*“Manuscripts in the Curriculum II” is an initiative of Les Enluminures\, a rare book firm based in Chicago\, New York\, and Paris\, which sponsors loans of medieval manuscripts for use in the classroom to universities and colleges in the US and Canada. The University of Guelph was one of four recipients of a Les Enluminures loan during the 2019/2020 academic year.

DESCRIPTION:The International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI) and the University of Guelph Department of History are excited to present historian Eric Fillion. A part of IICSI’s “Thinking Spaces” speaker series\, Fillion will showcase his groundbreaking research between 2:30-4 p.m. on March 12 in MacKinnon Building Room 308. A listening session led by Fillion will follow from 4:15 – 5:30 p.m. These events are open to the public and free of charge. \nFillion’s presentation\, entitled “Jazz Libre: The Musical-Political Praxis of the Quebec Left\,” will explore the work of Jazz Libre\, a musical collective formed in 1967 that sought to transform Quebec society in the wake of the Quiet Revolution. During its eight years of existence\, Jazz Libre encouraged students\, artists\, political activists and working families to participate in the liberating experience of free jazz. \nA postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto\, Fillion has published his research into this distinct moment in Canadian history in his book JAZZ LIBRE et la révolution Québécoise. For this particular research presentation\, Fillion has also curated a collection of songs and sounds to complement his talk—a fitting decision for this self-described “instinctive sound archivist\, forever eavesdropping on the past.” \nFillion’s presentation is part of the 14th annual Creative Music Symposium (March 9-13)\, a series of performances\, lectures\, and forums presented by the Music Students’ Association in the School of Fine Art and Music at the U of G. Taking place across campus and at Silence (46 Essex Street)\, this year’s symposium focuses on wellness and the future of music. \nThe keynote for this year’s symposium\, presented by Prof. Marta McCarthy\, is entitled “Wellness for Musicians in Six Songs.” Other events include a Music Vocational Fair\, a workshop on Music Therapy by practicing music therapist Mary Parkinson\, and several presentations from graduate students in the Critical Studies in Improvisation graduate programs.
