SUMMARY:ONLINE: Data Skills - Cleaning and Preparing Data Using OpenRefine
DESCRIPTION:Before we are able to analyze or visualize our data\, we have to clean and prepare it. Typical tasks include fixing spelling\, removing duplicate rows\, finding and replacing text\, changing number formats\, and merging and splitting columns. \nOpenRefine is a powerful data manipulation tool that cleans\, reshapes and edits batches of messy and unstructured data. When using OpenRefine to clean and transform data\, you can easily facet\, cluster\, edit cells\, reconcile and extend web services to convert a dataset to a more structured format. \nBy the end of this workshop you will be able to: \n\nexplain the importance of cleaning your data\ncomplete basic data cleaning tasks using OpenRefine\n\nYou must download and install the latest version of Open Refine. If you have any issues with your install\, please contact the IT Help Desk.

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Data Skills - Introduction to GIS Using ArcMap
DESCRIPTION:ArcGIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS): a software program for working with maps and geographic data. ArcMap is the desktop mapping software of ArcGIS. A GIS allows you to work with any data that you know a location for (e.g.\, addresses\, latitude/longitude\, census locations\, name of a place\, etc.). ArcMap is available for download to the University community. Although similar in some ways to online mapping sites\, ArcGIS has greater analytical capabilities and allows you more input and control over your map. \nIn this workshop we will learn how to navigate ArcMap\, kinds of GIS data\, how to add data to a map\, basic symbology and labelling\, how to filter data\, and how to create a finished map. \nWhen you register for this workshop you are committing to attend the entire workshop unless you confirm otherwise with the instructor. If you are suddenly not able to attend\, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can offer your spot to someone on our waiting list. \nYou must have ArcGIS installed on your computer prior to the workshop. You will not have time during the session to install the software. You must attend this workshop on a computer (not a mobile device).

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Pronunciation Group Online - Dialogues and Expressions
DESCRIPTION:This program is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students\, post-doctoral students\, visiting scholars/researchers\, staff and faculty with English as an additional language who would like to practice their English pronunciation and improve their communication skills for speaking English in everyday situations. Discussion of context-specific vocabulary and idioms will allow participants to create dialogues which will then be reviewed as a group for appropriate language\, pronunciation and sentence stress. Participants will then practice the dialogues in class and have access to them at home for further practice. \nAlthough it would benefit students to have participated in one or more of the other Pronunciation Groups (Sounds\, Words or Sentences) offered in the Fall and Winter semesters\, it is not a requirement.

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Data Skills - Intro to GIS Part 2 - Data Analysis and Visualization
DESCRIPTION:ArcGIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS): a software program for working with maps and geographic data. A GIS allows you to work with any data that you know a location for (e.g.\, addresses\, latitude / longitude\, census locations\, name of a place\, etc.). ArcGIS is available on all the Library computers\, also by download to the University community. Although similar in some ways to online mapping sites\, ArcGIS has greater analytical capabilities and allows you more input and control over your map. In this workshop we’ll learn further GIS tools\, work with tables\, and begin working with raster data. \nYou must have ArcGIS installed on your computer prior to the workshop. You will not have time during the session to install the software. You must attend this workshop on a computer (not a mobile device).

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Data Skills - Introduction to GIS using ArcGIS Online
DESCRIPTION:ArcGIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS); a software program for working with maps and geographic data. A GIS allows you to work with any data that you know a location for (eg. addresses\, latitude / longitude\, census locations\, name of a place…). ArcGIS Online can be used in your browser on any computer and is available to the University community by requesting an account. ArcGIS Online has less mapping capability than ArcMap but is easier to use and to learn. Please note that ArcGIS Online is not recommended if you want to save or download your finished map for publication as it is intended for creating online maps. \nIn this workshop we will learn how to navigate ArcGIS Online\, kinds of GIS data\, how to add data to a map\, basic symbology and labelling\, how to manually add data to your map\, and how to access analysis functions. \nWhen you register for this workshop you are committing to attend the entire workshop unless otherwise confirmed with the instructor. If you are suddenly not able to attend\, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can offer your spot to someone on our waiting list. \nYou must attend this workshop on a computer (not a mobile device).
