SUMMARY:ONLINE: Virtual Bird Songs
DESCRIPTION:Into birding but songs have you stumped? Join Chris Earley\, Arboretum Interpretive Biologist and author of five bird field guides\, for a series of eight virtual noon-hour lectures to cover over 150 bird species! We will focus on songs and some common\, distinctive calls and will apply different methods to remember them. Each course will start with a short intro topic about birding by ear before we dive into the bird species. Learn how to make your own calls\, read a sonogram\, make up your own memorable bird song sayings and more! We will finish each class with a 10-15 minute discussion period so you can ask all your bird-related questions. The course is suitable for those new to learning bird sounds as well as the more experienced. \nYou can sign up for individual courses for $8 (plus tax) each or take all eight at the discounted cost of $56 (plus tax – that’s eight courses for the price of seven!). See below to find out what bird groups are covered in each class. And don’t worry – if you miss one or this time doesn’t work for you\, you will be sent recorded programs afterwards and will have access to them for a month after the whole series. For those that take the whole course\, we will also be making the videos available again for a couple of weeks in April so you can review them just before the peak of spring singing occurs! \nFee: $8 (plus HST) per person\, per session or book all 8 in one transaction and get one free ($56 plus HST instead of $64 plus HST). \nMUST pre-register to attend this event

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Data Skills - Introduction to GIS using ArcGIS Online
DESCRIPTION:ArcGIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS); a software program for working with maps and geographic data. A GIS allows you to work with any data that you know a location for (e.g.\, addresses\, latitude/longitude\, census locations\, name of a place\, etc.). ArcGIS Online can be used in your browser on any computer and is available to the University community by requesting an account. ArcGIS Online has less mapping capability than ArcMap but is easier to use and to learn. Please note that ArcGIS Online is not recommended if you want to save or download your finished map for publication as it is intended for creating online maps. We’ll learn some GIS fundamentals and how to get started using ArcGIS Online. \nIn this workshop we will learn how to navigate ArcGIS Online\, kinds of GIS data\, how to add data to a map\, basic symbology and labelling\, how to manually add data to your map\, and how to access analysis functions. \nPLEASE NOTE: \nWhen you register for this workshop you are committing to attend the entire workshop unless otherwise confirmed with the instructor. This workshop is limited to 12 attendees. If you are suddenly not able to attend\, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can offer your spot to someone on our waiting list. \nYou must attend this workshop on a computer (not a mobile device). We cannot troubleshoot software during the session. You will find you are able to participate more fully if you have a second screen on your computer. \nPlease note: this workshop will take place online via Zoom. A reminder email with the meeting link will be emailed to you 24 hours before the workshop.
