SUMMARY:Truth or Treason? Sources for the Study of Jacobites in Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Scottish Studies students present their research and as we celebrate their remarkable achievements with a reception. \nAfter the revolutions of 1688\, the Jacobite movement posed a very serious challenge to the legitimacy of state structures throughout Scotland\, England and Wales\, and Ireland. The University of Guelph’s renowned Scottish Studies Collection boasts an outstanding array of Jacobite-related materials that speak to the complexity of the Jacobite movement\, the deep divisions it generated\, and broad alliances in which it was implicated. This fall\, Scottish Studies undergraduate and graduate students have been exploring these extraordinary sources in collaboration with Archival and Special Collections\, as they prepare to curate a forthcoming exhibit\, to be launched in 2023. \nEarly registration is encouraged as seating is limited. \nThe event is supported by the Centre for Scottish Studies\, the Department of History and Archival & Special Collections (McLaughlin Library) at the University of Guelph.

SUMMARY:Thinking Spaces presents Improv for Scientists: Joanne O’Meara and Shoshanah Jacobs in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Thinking Spaces: The Improvisation Reading Group and Speaker Series is pleased to present “Improv for Scientists”: Joanne O’Meara in conversation with Shoshanah Jacobs. This event will take place on Thursday\, December 8 at 1 p.m. in person (Mackinnon building\, room 103\, University of Guelph) as well as streamed online (via Zoom). A moderated Q&A will follow the talk. \nIf you are interested in attending online\, please register via https://uoguel.ph/thinkingspacesimprovforscientists. A Zoom link will be sent to your email the day before the event. \nMore about this talk\nImprovisational exercises have been a key element of theatre training for decades. With minor modification\, these same exercises can be used in training scientists (and future scientists) to be better communicators. I’ll discuss my use of improv with our physics majors at U of G and give some examples of the science-y twists we throw on the activities to suit our purposes. \nMore about our speakers\nJoanne O’Meara has been a professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Guelph for more than 20 years\, serving for almost 10 of those years as the associate chair (undergraduate). Joanne earned her PhD in medical physics from McMaster University and has since transitioned to a focus on physics education in her scholarly work. She is an award-winning educator with a deep commitment to her students. Her most recent project involves the launch of a non-profit organization\, Royal City Science\, with the ultimate goal of building a new\, state-of-the-art\, science centre for southwestern Ontario. \nDr. Shoshanah Jacobs takes a systems approach to answering questions that are relevant within the communities that they work with. It means that they spend a lot of time learning about other disciplines. Their research expertise includes eco-physiology and biomimetics (AKA biomimicry) and they apply this training to help communities develop nature-inspired solutions to challenges. They have worked with the community of Guelph in identifying ways to accessibly reduce the use of single-use plastics\, and have tracked the way that personal-protective equipment (PPE) moves through and away from the waste stream to affect wildlife around the world. Dr. Jacobs started the BioM Knowledge Access Lab research group in 2012 to make science knowledge more accessible to community members and to engage the community in designing more inclusive ways of collecting information. They are an Associate Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology. Ask them why Gentoo Penguins are simply the best.

SUMMARY:Gathering Hope: Evidence and Inspiration for Environmental Action
DESCRIPTION:Join the Kinross Chair in Environmental Governance for a virtual panel discussion on evidence-based hope and environmental solutions. Kinross Chair Stephanie Cairns will moderate a discussion with high-profile panelists\, including keynote speaker Dr. Elin Kelsey\, author of Hope Matters. \n“…because we only hear about problems\, we’re missing the evidence of things that are moving in a positive direction. And what that ends up doing is it causes us to feel like all of our hard work is for naught…we’re at the starting line.”\n— Dr. Elin Kelsey on CBC Radio’s Quirks & Quarks \nKeynote\nDr. Elin Kelsey is a scholar and thought-leader for the evidence-based hope and climate solutions movement. She is the author of Hope Matters: Why Changing the Way We Think is Critical to Solving the Environmental Crisis (Greystone Books\, 2020). Recognizing the crucial role of climate emotions to climate engagement\, she works on a range of collaborative projects with researchers\, artists\, journalists\, educators and youth. Kelsey is passionate about bringing science-based stories of hope and multi-species resilience to the public through workshops around the world. \nModerator\nStephanie Cairns\, MSc is the 2022-23 Kinross Chair in Environmental Governance\, a knowledge exchange chair which connects the academic focus of University of Guelph programs with real-world environmental governance initiatives\, programs and practice. She has been advancing environmental solutions for over three decades\, working with many of Canada’s leading NGOs\, policy institutes\, expert panels\, and political leaders on the topics of circular economy\, climate and clean energy\, natural capital\, and ecological restoration. \nPanelists\nAbhay Singh Sachal is a Canadian humanitarian\, environmentalist\, and activist who believes that engagement in dialogue and conversation can serve to spark change around the world. After a trip to the Arctic in 2016\, he founded Break The Divide Foundation\, a non-profit organization that connects youth around the world\, fostering empathy and understanding to inspire local youth action projects in communities. Sachal sits on the Environmental and Climate Change Canada Youth Council and was recently named one of Canada’s Top 25 Under 25 Environmentalists. \nJacquie Hutchings is a chemical engineering graduate from the University of Waterloo with a passion for environmental sustainability. After graduating and looking for new opportunities\, Hutchings and her classmate Kayli Dale decided they couldn’t live and work in a world where the climate crisis was not a priority. They teamed up to found Friendlier\, a reusable food packaging company. Friendlier now supports over 150 businesses across Ontario and the founders have been included on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for 2023 in the Social Impact category. \nJane McDonald is the senior vice-president at the advisory firm Climate and Nature Solutions. Her 20+ years of experience as an executive in the environmental sector include serving as Policy Director for the Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change\, leading two of Canada’s major sustainability think tanks\, and advocating for renewable energy growth in the corporate world. McDonald currently serves as a board director of the Transition Accelerator and was named one of Foresight Canada’s 20 Women Leading Clean Tech 2022. \nTrennon Wint is a bachelor of science student at the University of Guelph studying wildlife biology and conservation with a minor in applied geomatics. He has always been fascinated with the natural world and has found a sense of community in the way that nature brings people together. On campus\, Wint has volunteered as a bird-of-prey handler and outreach representative at Wild Ontario\, conducted research on droughts and precision agriculture\, and worked as a research assistant with the Ontario Public Interest Research Group to address social and environmental concerns. \nLearn more at https://csahs.uoguelph.ca/events/2023/01/gathering-hope-evidence-and-inspiration-environmental-action

SUMMARY:2023 Marcel Ali Lecture in Aquatic Biology
DESCRIPTION:The College of Biological Science is proud to host Prof. Holly A. Shiels (Faculty of Biology\, Medicine and Health\, University of Manchester) as the keynote speaker of the 2023 Marcel Ali Lecture in Aquatic Biology. \nFrom Oil Spills to Air Pollution: The Heartbreak of PAHs\nPolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) derive from fossil fuels and enter aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems where they are cardiotoxic. This seminar will begin with marine oil spills and the evidence pointing to the 3-ringed PAH – phenanthrene – as a key cardiotoxicant for fish and aquatic invertebrates. The data will show how exposure to this single but ubiquitous pollutant disrupts cellular function in cardiomyocytes leading to changes in whole organ function. These effects increase susceptibility to life-threatening arrhythmias and mechanistically link an abundant pollutant to cardiac health risk. As global levels of fossil-fuel based pollution continue to rise\, the vertebrate cardiotoxicity discussed here also serves as a portend for human health. \nJoin us in-person (ALEX 200) or online (https://zoom.us/j/95799778017?pwd=a21wbU1oUC9kWFRNbVVJOFU4RTh3QT09; Meeting ID: 957 9977 8017; Passcode: 402870) \nEVERYONE IS WELCOME TO ATTEND! \nFor questions about this event\, email tgillis@uoguelph.ca.

SUMMARY:The Winegard Visiting Lectureship in Physics with Dr. Donna Strickland
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Winegard Visiting Lectureship in Physics with Dr. Donna Strickland\, Professor and Nobel Prize laureate\, for a lecture on nonlinear optics to high-intensity laser physics. \nThe laser increased the intensity of light that can be generated by orders of magnitude and thus brought about nonlinear optical interactions with matter. Chirped pulse amplification\, also known as CPA\, changed the intensity level by a few more orders of magnitude and helped usher in a new type of laser-matter interaction that is referred to as high-intensity laser physics. \nDr. Donna Strickland is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Waterloo and is one of the laureate of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018 for developing chirped pulse amplification with Gérard Mourour. \nRegistration required by March 9. \nLearn more at https://alumni.uoguelph.ca/events/events-listing/2023-winegard-lecture-with-dr-donna-strickland.
