SUMMARY:Jacobites\, Jacobins and Outlanders: Scotland in Cultural Memory
DESCRIPTION:This community event will feature presentations by faculty\, graduate students and Archival and Special Collections staff\, and is part of a wider partnership between the University of Guelph and Simon Fraser University. \nSpecial guest speaker Professor Viccy Coltman will present an exploratory and informal talk titled\, ‘Wartime: Scottish officers in military service\, 1793-1815’. \nIn the last thirty years\, the study of martial culture in Britain during the period of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars has been foregrounded in various humanities disciplines as scholars sought to reclaim academic military history with its traditional focus on campaigns\, commanders and tactics for cultural studies\, with its equivalent emphases on poems\, novels and plays. Despite the efflorescence of publications from history and English Literature\, art history has lagged behind\, and within the existing literature\, there has been no focussed study of Scottish officers and Highland regiments during this period of intense and prolonged warfare that lasted almost a quarter of a century\, or a generation. As Captain John Kincaid wrote in his Adventures in the rifle brigade in the Peninsula\, France and the Netherlands\, from 1809 to 1815\, (London\, 1830)\, ‘We had been born in war\, reared in war\, and war was our trade’. \nViccy Coltman’s work-in-progress seeks to write a cultural history of wartime which privileges Scottish commanders-in-chief of the British army including Sir Ralph Abercromby and Sir John Moore and the contributions of the 42nd\, 79th and 92nd Highland Regiments at major battles of Alexandria (1801) and Waterloo (1815). She situates a range and raft of temporalities at stake in this period and its visual and material representation\, both contemporary and posthumous. \nIn this illustrated talk\, Viccy offers an overview of her current book project\, focussing on a series of key images and objects which she has identified\, including understudied and unpublished martial portraits by Edinburgh’s leading portrait painter\, Henry Raeburn. \nViccy Coltman is a Professor of history of art at the University of Edinburgh. Her most recent book was Art and Identity in Scotland: A cultural history from the 1745 Jacobite uprising to Walter Scott\, (Cambridge\, 2019; paperback 2021). Her wartime book in preparation has been supported by fellowships from the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art and at the Anne S. K. Brown military collection at Brown University. \nRegistration is available on the event website and early registration is encouraged. The event is free and open to the public. \nThe event is supported by the Centre for Scottish Studies at the University of Guelph\, the Research Centre for Scottish Studies at Simon Fraser University and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Connections Grant program.

SUMMARY:Kerala Return Migrant Survey 2021: The Case of COVID-19 Return Migrants
DESCRIPTION:The Canada India Research Centre for Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) hosts a presentation by S Irudaya Rajan\, Chair\, International Institute of Migration and Development \nReturn migration is an optional yet natural consequence of emigration. Considering the Kerala migration pattern which results in a large number of migrants located in the Gulf\, where permanent residence remains a pipe dream\, return migration is almost inevitable. The COVID-19 global pandemic precipitated an unprecedented wave of return migration across the globe. We document the experiences of 1985 return migrants through a quantitative survey. While return migrants have always been a demographically and economically significant section of Kerala’s population\, the COVID-19 return migrants represent a unique case in history with ramifications for the economy\, society\, and psyche of Kerala. \nS Irudaya Rajan is currently visiting CERC scholar at the Toronto Metropolitan University. He is Chairman of the International Institute of Migration and Development (IIMAD)\, and chair of the World Bank’s Global Knowledge Partnership on Migration and Development (KNOMAD) thematic working group on internal migration and urbanization. For 35 years\, he was a professor at the Centre for Development Studies\, and chair of the Research Unit on International Migration funded by the erstwhile Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs\, Government of India (2006–16). Rajan was the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal Migration and Development and the editor of the Routledge series India Migration Report and South Asia Migration Report. \nA light lunch will be provided. Please register if you are planning to attend to help us order the right amount of food. \nPresented by: Canada India Research Centre for Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at the University of Guelph.

SUMMARY:Gaelic Influence in the Northumbrian Kingdom
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centre for Scottish Studies for a virtual lecture delivered by Dr. Fiona Edmonds\, winner of the Frank Watson Book Prize 2021. \nProfessor Fiona Edmonds will give a lecture that draws on the highlights of her book Gaelic Influence in the Northumbrian Kingdom: The Golden Age and the Viking Age\, Studies in Celtic History 40 (Boydell and Brewer\, 2019). Fiona Edmonds is a professor in Regional History and Director of the Regional Heritage Centre at Lancaster University (UK). \nThe book tells the story of Northumbria\, a kingdom that encompassed northern England as well as parts of southern Scotland. Composed of a series of seminars\, this year’s Symposium will examine how rising costs are affecting food safety along the food supply chain; the challenges and benefits of food rescue; and the role alternative protein sources play. A panel of experts will join our last session to address questions on how to safely stretch our food dollars. \nSession 1: At what cost? Food safety and rising prices\nSession 2: Waste Not; Want Not: Food Diversion at Its Finest\nSession 3: Alternative proteins – Are we there yet?\nSession 4: How to Stretch your Food Dollar Safely – Q&A Session \nThe Symposium is free but registration is required. Register for as many sessions as you would like. Details can be found at: https://www.uoguelph.ca/foodscience/19th-annual-guelph-food-safety-seminars-symposium \nContact Dr. Susan Sabatini\, Food Science ssabatin@uoguelph.ca with any questions. \nThe Guelph Food Safety Seminars (GFSS) began in 2004 to provide a forum in which to share timely and pertinent food safety topics. The GFSS Organizing Committee plans seminars throughout the year and an annual symposium. Our objective is to bring together people from the Guelph Food Safety Network and others who are interested in the risk management approach to food quality and safety to learn\, educate\, illuminate\, and discuss issues of common interest and broaden networks. The GFSS is a partnership in agri-food safety: AAFC\, CFIA; CIPHI (Ontario); Health Canada; NSF International; OMAFRA; PHAC; University of Guelph (Department of Food Science and CRIFS).
