SUMMARY:Stories from the Shield: Visual Storytelling with Bonnie Devine
DESCRIPTION:Join the Art Gallery of Guelph for a talk with Anishinaabe/Ojibwa artist Bonnie Devine as she explores the connection between art\, activism and storytelling. Inspired by her bookwork Book of Transformation\, on view in the AGG’s exhibition “The Drive”\, Devine will address the connections between oral traditions and visual narratives of the Anishinaabe and how these play a critical role in relationships with the land. Part of her larger project “Stories from the Shield\,” this work addresses the devastating effect that uranium mining had on the Serpent River and the wider watershed. \nFamilies welcome. Children will be engaged in a hands-on art activity during the talk. Presented in conjunction with the Indigenous Healing & Wellness Program Wellington-Waterloo. A member of the Serpent River First Nation\, Bonnie Devine is based in Toronto where she is Professor Emeritus at OCAD University and the Founding Chair of its Indigenous Visual Cultural Program.

SUMMARY:Arboretum: Mushrooms Through Summer and Fall Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Explore the mysterious\, weird and wonderful world of fungi! The course is open to students of any skill level\, with the assumption that most will be beginners. However\, if you want to take more than one\, it is recommended to spread them out in order to see the greatest diversity. The morning foray will be followed by an identification session. A species list will be compiled for each foray and a combined foray list will be sent to all interested participants. Please bring a collecting basket of some sort. You are encouraged to bring a field guide\, such as George Barron’s field guide\, Mushrooms of Ontario and Eastern Canada as well as a digital camera and jump drive for sharing photos. \nGuest Instructor: Tim Myles. \nRegistration \nEarly Bird Fee: $50 PLUS a $10 fee per transaction by Aug. 2 (Note: You can register for multiple workshops and/or multiple people in one transaction so you only pay the $10 once). \nRegular Fee: $60 plus transaction fee. \nNote: If we don’t have enough registrations by the early bird deadline the course may be cancelled. Maximum 16. \nNote: There are 5 “Mushrooms through Summer and Fall” workshops offered in 2019 on the following Saturdays: July 13\, Aug. 10\, Sept. 21\, Oct. 19 and Nov. 9.
