SUMMARY:Kerala Return Migrant Survey 2021: The Case of COVID-19 Return Migrants
DESCRIPTION:The Canada India Research Centre for Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) hosts a presentation by S Irudaya Rajan\, Chair\, International Institute of Migration and Development \nReturn migration is an optional yet natural consequence of emigration. Considering the Kerala migration pattern which results in a large number of migrants located in the Gulf\, where permanent residence remains a pipe dream\, return migration is almost inevitable. The COVID-19 global pandemic precipitated an unprecedented wave of return migration across the globe. We document the experiences of 1985 return migrants through a quantitative survey. While return migrants have always been a demographically and economically significant section of Kerala’s population\, the COVID-19 return migrants represent a unique case in history with ramifications for the economy\, society\, and psyche of Kerala. \nS Irudaya Rajan is currently visiting CERC scholar at the Toronto Metropolitan University. He is Chairman of the International Institute of Migration and Development (IIMAD)\, and chair of the World Bank’s Global Knowledge Partnership on Migration and Development (KNOMAD) thematic working group on internal migration and urbanization. For 35 years\, he was a professor at the Centre for Development Studies\, and chair of the Research Unit on International Migration funded by the erstwhile Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs\, Government of India (2006–16). Rajan was the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal Migration and Development and the editor of the Routledge series India Migration Report and South Asia Migration Report. \nA light lunch will be provided. SUMMARY:Gaelic Influence in the Northumbrian Kingdom
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centre for Scottish Studies for a virtual lecture delivered by Dr. Fiona Edmonds\, winner of the Frank Watson Book Prize 2021. \nProfessor Fiona Edmonds will give a lecture that draws on the highlights of her book Gaelic Influence in the Northumbrian Kingdom: The Golden Age and the Viking Age\, Studies in Celtic History 40 (Boydell and Brewer\, 2019). Fiona Edmonds is a professor in Regional History and Director of the Regional Heritage Centre at Lancaster University (UK). \nThe book tells the story of Northumbria\, a kingdom that encompassed northern England as well as parts of southern Scotland. It explores influences that emanated from the Gaelic-speaking world\, including Ireland\, the Isle of Man\, Argyll and the Scottish kingdom of Alba. The book encompasses Northumbria’s ‘Golden Age’\, the kingdom’s political and scholarly high-point of the seventh and early eighth centuries and culminates with the kingdom’s decline and fragmentation in the Viking Age\, which opened up new links with Gaelic-Scandinavian communities. \nThe Frank Watson Book Prize is awarded by the Centre for Scottish Studies in odd-numbered years for the best monograph\, edited collection and/or book-length original work on Scottish History published in the previous two years. \nRegistration is available on the event website and early registration is encouraged\, as tickets are limited. The event is free and open to the public. \nPlease note:\nThis event will be hosted live on Zoom and the link will be posted on the event page and emailed to all registered attendants 24 hours before the event begins.

DESCRIPTION:The Department of Anthropology is pleased to host this free lecture by Dr. Brooke Crowley (PhD)\, a professor in the Department Geology and Anthropology and the Geology Graduate Director at the University of Cincinnati. She investigates ecological interactions among living and recently extinct animals (including humans) using stable isotope biogeochemistry. Her interests include niche partitioning\, conservation biology and Quaternary paleoecology. She is particularly interested in the causes and consequences of recent extinctions\, and the ecological repercussions of habitat fragmentation and degradation.

He is also the President of AIM (Arts in the Margins)\, the director of LUC (Laboratory of Urban Culture)\, and sits on the management committee of IICSI. He is a member of Medea Electronique\, and an active improvisor on brass and electronics.

There is also an option to listen to the lecture via Microsoft Teams. This is a free event and all are welcome. \nAbout the Lecture: The generally held belief is that careful planning leads us to desired outcomes. It is also known that serendipity or accidents influence life of the individuals and the communities. While taking some examples of serendipity and unintended collisions including those at the Ontario Veterinary College that shaped his life\, relationships and professional career\, Dr. Singh would like to engage with the U of G community on this and other topics. \nDr. Baljit Singh is a highly accomplished researcher\, educator and administrator in the field of veterinary medicine\, with specific expertise in lung biology and anatomy. His research has focused on cell and molecular biology of lung inflammation. Dr. Singh has received the 3M National Teaching Fellowship\, the Alan Blizzard National Award for Collaboration in University Teaching and Learning\, the University of Saskatchewan Master Teacher Award\, the University of Saskatchewan’s Provost’s Prize for Innovative Practice of Teaching and Learning\, and the Carl J. Norden Distinguished Teacher Award. He has also received the Outstanding Veterinary Anatomist Award from the American Association of Veterinary Anatomists\, as well as the Pfizer Award for Research Excellence. DESCRIPTION:Join us as Scottish Studies students present their research and as we celebrate their remarkable achievements with a reception. \nAfter the revolutions of 1688\, the Jacobite movement posed a very serious challenge to the legitimacy of state structures throughout Scotland\, England and Wales\, and Ireland. The University of Guelph’s renowned Scottish Studies Collection boasts an outstanding array of Jacobite-related materials that speak to the complexity of the Jacobite movement\, the deep divisions it generated\, and broad alliances in which it was implicated. This fall\, Scottish Studies undergraduate and graduate students have been exploring these extraordinary sources in collaboration with Archival and Special Collections\, as they prepare to curate a forthcoming exhibit\, to be launched in 2023. \nEarly registration is encouraged as seating is limited. \nThe event is supported by the Centre for Scottish Studies\, the Department of History and Archival & Special Collections (McLaughlin Library) at the University of Guelph.

DESCRIPTION:Thinking Spaces: The Improvisation Reading Group and Speaker Series is pleased to present “Improv for Scientists”: Joanne O’Meara in conversation with Shoshanah Jacobs. This event will take place on Thursday\, December 8 at 1 p.m. in person (Mackinnon building\, room 103\, University of Guelph) as well as streamed online (via Zoom). A Zoom link will be sent to your email the day before the event. \nMore about this talk\nImprovisational exercises have been a key element of theatre training for decades. With minor modification\, these same exercises can be used in training scientists (and future scientists) to be better communicators. I’ll discuss my use of improv with our physics majors at U of G and give some examples of the science-y twists we throw on the activities to suit our purposes. \nMore about our speakers\nJoanne O’Meara has been a professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Guelph for more than 20 years\, serving for almost 10 of those years as the associate chair (undergraduate). Joanne earned her PhD in medical physics from McMaster University and has since transitioned to a focus on physics education in her scholarly work. She is an award-winning educator with a deep commitment to her students. Her most recent project involves the launch of a non-profit organization\, Royal City Science\, with the ultimate goal of building a new\, state-of-the-art\, science centre for southwestern Ontario. \nDr. Shoshanah Jacobs takes a systems approach to answering questions that are relevant within the communities that they work with. It means that they spend a lot of time learning about other disciplines. Their research expertise includes eco-physiology and biomimetics (AKA biomimicry) and they apply this training to help communities develop nature-inspired solutions to challenges. They have worked with the community of Guelph in identifying ways to accessibly reduce the use of single-use plastics\, and have tracked the way that personal-protective equipment (PPE) moves through and away from the waste stream to affect wildlife around the world. Dr. Jacobs started the BioM Knowledge Access Lab research group in 2012 to make science knowledge more accessible to community members and to engage the community in designing more inclusive ways of collecting information. They are an Associate Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology. Ask them why Gentoo Penguins are simply the best.
