SUMMARY:ONLINE: Thinking Spaces Speaker Series with Dong-Won Kim
DESCRIPTION:Thinking Spaces: The Reading Group and Speaker Series is pleased to present percussionist\, pedagogue\, vocalist\, composer and improviser Dong-Won Kim for his talk “Time to Plant Seed.” \nThis event will take place via Zoom. A moderated Q&A will follow the talk. \nIf you are interested in attending\, please register online. \n“Time To Plant Seed”: Now\, we all know that the world and music environment won’t be the same after the pandemic. Perhaps we have to define it as a crisis for musicians and performers. However\, I’d suggest we pursue the value of improvisation in times of desperation. It’s like when farmers lose their harvest for some reason; they always go back to the stage of planting a seed. I believe that improvisation becomes more valuable in times of crisis because it always leads us to the most essential elements of artistry and humanity. We can start over from there. We have each other and technologies to keep us contacted. – Dong-Won Kim \nDong-Won Kim has studied the traditional music of the Korean masters and works to introduce the world to the beauty of Korean traditional culture and music via his participation in numerous intercultural projects. He has performed across the globe\, most prominently as a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. Kim is a music professor\, teaching online through Wonkwang Digital University in Korea. In 2001\, he wrote the fairy tale “Story of Salmunori\,” and he features in the music documentary Intangible Asset Number 82 (2009). An activist\, he was incarcerated as a political prisoner in 1987 after being part of an “illegal assembly” for the funeral of a young victim of police violence. \nAs always\, Thinking Spaces is free and open to all. We hope to see you there! Thank you to the School of Fine Art and Music for sponsoring this event! \nHosted by the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI)

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Black History Month - Black Leadership in Anti-Black Spaces with Laura Mae Lindo
DESCRIPTION:James Baldwin once wrote: “To be a negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all the time.” His words continue to ring true. As we navigate a global pandemic that disproportionately impacts Black communities across the province\, we are asked to justify our calls for culturally responsive resources. We are told that we do not have sufficient proof that our bodies are those primarily on the frontlines. And when we call for race-based data collection to prove what we all know is true\, our request is denied\, implemented only voluntarily in public health units that may see value in protecting our lives. These are only some examples of what anti-Blackness looks like in Ontario in 2021. And this is why Black leadership matters. Join me in conversation about what it means to Lead While Black in an Anti-Black World. This event is open to everyone. \nLaura Mae Lindo will lead a presentation on Black Leadership in Anti-Black Spaces\, followed by a Q&A/discussion afterward. \nThis event is open to everyone. \nFind more Black History Month events at U of G.

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Diverse Perspectives on Knowledge Mobilization - A GIER Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The Guelph Institute for Environmental Research (GIER) is pleased to invite you to the webinar “Diverse Perspectives on Knowledge Mobilization.” \nOur panelists will be Caroline Duvieusart-Dery\, Georgia Simms and Tommy Mayberry\, discussing creative ways to mobilize interdisciplinary environmental research. \nWe have long known that we need to mobilize research knowledge more creatively if we wish to tackle ‘wicked’ environmental problems and put research into practice. Increasingly siloed disciplines\, a disconnect between arts and science\, and a lack of engagement and equity in academia and society jeopardize our capacity to collaboratively respond to environmental crises in a creative\, innovative and equitable way. This webinar brings fresh and novel perspectives on knowledge mobilization to enrich environmental conversations. Join the Guelph Institute for Environmental Research (GIER)\, in partnership with Food from Thought\, as we discuss with experts how critical community engagement\, arts and diversity and inclusion perspectives can advance the way we think\, do and mobilize interdisciplinary environmental research. \nTo register for this free webinar\, visit https://gier.eventbrite.ca or email info.gier@uoguelph.ca. \nPlease help us direct attention to this webinar by sharing with your network and on social media. \nWe look forward to having you join us!

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Assisted Reproductive Technologies and Farmers in India
DESCRIPTION:Can assisted reproductive technologies enhance livestock productivity and farm income in India? \nIndia decided to double farmers’ income by the year 2022. With just two years left for achieving the goal\, it is quite clear that achievement of this feat will be difficult without adoption and enhancement of dairy farming\, which has a compound annual growth rate of 19.6 per cent. Close to 85 per cent of the farms in India are marginal and small\, owning only 45 per cent of the land while possessing 75 per cent of the cattle. For a landless person\, dairying is one of the best occupations. The solution to the current agrarian distress rests in the support to the livestock and dairy sectors. \nThe invited panel will discuss the role and strategies of assisted reproductive technologies in enhancing livestock productivity and farmers income. \nRegister for the Assisted Reproductive Technologies and Farmers in India webinar. \nDiscussion Panel: \n\nDr. Manmohan S. Chauhan\, Director\, National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI)\, Karnal\, Haryana\, India.\nDr. Chauhan holds MSc and PhD degrees from NDRI\, Karnal and has trained at several labs in the USA\, Canada and Germany. He has significantly contributed towards the development and growth of Assisted Reproductive Technologies in India. Before his current appointment\, Dr. Chauhan was the Director of Central Institute for Research on Goats\, Makdoom\, Uttar Pradesh\, India.\nDr. Inderjeet Singh\, Vice Chancellor\, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University (GADVASU)\, Ludhiana\, Punjab\, India.\nDr. Inderjeet holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Veterinary sciences and Animal Husbandry from Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCSHAU)\, Hisar. The Zoom room link will be sent out a day before the event. \nThis talk will frame improvisation as a practice through which we can better understand the densities and significance of performing Indigeneity in its many forms\, including is/as an idea\, analytic and process. Bissett Perea will share examples from her in-press book Sound Relations: Native Ways of Doing Music History in Alaska (Oxford UP\, Forthcoming 2021) to demonstrate how privileging the aesthetics and logics of tribal and intertribal musicians with whom she works develops a more Native music studies\, and a more musical Native American studies. This work addresses a greater need to ask more Indigenous-led and Indigeneity-centered questions in arts and humanities research to generate transformative possibilities for more just futures locally and globally. \nJessica Bissett Perea is an interdisciplinary scholar whose work intersects the larger fields of Native American and Indigenous Studies and Music and Sound Studies. She specializes in Critical Indigenous Studies approaches to performance\, media and improvisation studies; arts and activism in North Pacific and Circumpolar Arctic communities; and relational studies of Indigenous and Black experiences and creative expressions in the Americas. She is the founding director of the Indigeneity Collaboratory\, an Indigenous-led and Indigeneity-centered research collective working to advance relational ways of being\, knowing\, and doing to generate more just futures for Indigenous communities. \nThis event is being co-presented with the University of Guelph’s Music Students’ Association during their 15th Annual Music Symposium. \nAs always\, Thinking Spaces is free and open to all.
