SUMMARY:Introducing Mushrooms Workshop
DESCRIPTION:  \nExplore the mysterious\, weird and wonderful world of fungi!  From giant puffballs emerging from the ground to strange little bird’s nests growing on wood. Learn to distinguish editble Agaricus from deadly Amanita. \nThe morning will begin with a short classroom discussion of general categories of fungi: slime moulds\, moulds\, sac\, club\, jellies\, corals\, toothed\, puffballs\, stinkhorns\, polypores\, boletes and mushroom.  We will then set out for a morning foray in the deciduous forested areas of The Arboretum.  After a few hours of collecting\, we will return to the classroom to sort\, identify and assemble the species list\, noting habitat and host substrate for each species.  In the afternoon we will do another foray into the cedar – spruce – hemlock dominated forest on the nature reserve of The Arboretum and then assemble a species list for this area.  At this time of year\, in the autumn\, it is likely that we will encounter 75 – 100 or more different species representing a wide range of both slime mould and fungi.  There will also be discussions ranging from the crucial roles mushrooms play in the environment to cool natural history facts. \nEach person will be provided with checklists to record the day’s finds and a list of suggested resources.  Please bring a collecting basket of some sort.  You are encouraged to bring a field guide\, such as George Barron’s field guide\, Mushrooms of Ontario and Eastern Canada as well as a digital camera and jump drive for sharing photos. You should also bring sunscreen\, insect repellent\, water\, snacks and a lunch. \nRegister online \nGuest Instructor: Tim Myles. \nEarly Bird Fee: $75 per person by Sept. 20. \nRegular Fee: $85 per person. \nNote: If we don’t have enough registrations by the early bird deadline the course may be cancelled. Maximum 16 participants.

SUMMARY:Evolutionary Technologies for Additive Manufacturing Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Enabling Advanced Solutions by Connecting Universities and 3D Printing Industries \nSince the introduction of 3D printing in the 1980s\, manufacturers have well understood its benefits in producing complex parts. Now\, many companies are turning to additive manufacturing. \nHowever\, to further realize the advantages of additive manufacturing\, these technologies require more discussion between academia and industry: \n\nReduce cost of entry\nReduce waste in building 3D-printed engineering compliant parts\nIncrease affordability\nReduce waste\nProduction savings on energy costs\n\nThis seminar will discuss these topics collaboratively between academia and industry to better understand current and upcoming technologies. \nRichards Building\, Room 3504

SUMMARY:Data Skills Workshop: GIS
DESCRIPTION:ArcGIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS)\, a software program for working with maps and geographic data. A GIS allows you to work with any data that you know a location for (e.g.\, addresses\, latitude/longitude\, census locations\, name of a place\, etc.). ArcGIS is available on all the Library computers\, and by download to the University community. Although similar in some ways to online mapping sites\, ArcGIS has greater analytical capabilities and allows you more input and control over your map. We’ll learn some GIS fundamentals and how to get started using ArcGIS. \nIn this workshop we will learn how to navigate ArcMap\, kinds of GIS data\, how to add data to a map\, basic symbology and labelling\, how to filter data and how to calculate new data and map it. \nMcLaughlin Library\, Room 289
