SUMMARY:Netherlands Field School Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about the Netherlands Field School  (1.0 credits) – an opportunity open to all second\, third and fourth year students. The field school takes place from the last week of April through the first week of May.  The field school consists of two days of seminars in Guelph followed by 16 days in Amsterdam and the Hague.  Find out about cost\, content and other logistics. \nStudents will explore the historical and contemporary factors that have led to the contradictions apparent in Dutch culture today. The Netherlands is an incredibly liberal\, open country\, home to key international institutions promoting world peace. However\, anti-immigration and anti-Islam sentiment is surprisingly strong in the country. We will explore these contradictions through field trips to many museums\, places of cultural importance and historical sites\, including the International Court of Justice\, Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum. \nUniversity Centre\, Room 442 (take the North Elevators)

SUMMARY:"Tibetan Stories" film screening
DESCRIPTION:Director Carey Russell is bringing his mini-films “Tibetan Stories” to U of G. Join us for this free screening\, open to everyone. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Carey Russell. \n“Tibetan Stories” is a documentary web-series created to explore the lives and values of contemporary Tibetan refugees. Particularly in the western imagination\, the practice of Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan culture are regularly romanticized and objectified making an understanding of the perspectives and daily rituals of ordinary Tibetans difficult to acquire. Each film in the series is both a morality tale\, based on the principles of Buddhist philosophy\, and a social time-capsule regarding this unique community of refugees at this moment in their history. \nAbout the Director: Carey Russell is an internationally recognized photographer\, filmmaker and frequent collaborator with director Terrence Malick. He worked as an associate producer of “The New World\,” assisted cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki on “The Tree of Life\,” and contributed additional photography for the feature-length version of “Voyage of Time.” He formed the production company Kestrel Filmworks to promote themes of environmental literacy and human rights\, while mentoring local students and community-based organizations during production. \nMacKinnon Building\, Room 306
