SUMMARY:STEM Week: Fizzics Pub Night with Wellington Brewery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening about the science of beer! \nOur pub night will include talks from 3M National Teaching Fellowship award winner Prof. Joanne O’Meara and VP of Brewing and Quality for Wellington Brewery Marvin Dyck. Also enjoy sampling the altered states of beer and a special physics beer brewed especially for this night by Wellington Brewery! \nThe Science of (beer) Mouthfeel – Marvin Dyck \nBeer is a fluid\, and like all fluids it is affected by properties such as surface tension\, viscosity and carbonation. Not only do these properties affect the way in which a fluid behaves\, it also affects the way in which our brains interpret the flavor of the beer. This is the idea of mouthfeel\, the physical sensations in the mouth produced by a particular beer. VP of Brewing and Quality for Wellington Brewery Marvin Dyck is a U of G Food Science graduate. Using the same beer\, Marvin has created an array of samples by varying physical properties such as carbonation\, surface tension and viscosity during the brewing process. How does this affect the beer? And\, perhaps more importantly\, how does this affect the way in which your brain interprets how the same beer tastes? Join us as Marvin teaches us the science of beer mouthfeel. \nA sampling of these ‘altered states’ of beer will follow. \nThe Physics of Fizz – Prof. Joanne O’Meara \nFrom champagne to stout\, bubbles are a key feature of many of our favourite beverages. We’ll talk about the science behind their formation and pour a few glasses to get a better understanding of how this science is put into action. You’ll also get the chance to test out our bubble column\, so pop on by! \nThis event is the final night of STEM Week 2019\, a week of interactive science sessions at Guelph Museums involving over 600 grade 6 students\, home schoolers and Girl Guides put on by the Department of Physics\, University of Guelph. \nSponsored by Innovation Guelph. \n19+ event/No cover charge/Fifth Friday

SUMMARY:KTT Best Practices: Building a 'next generation' KTT program
DESCRIPTION:Since 2010\, the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance has been supporting research exploring the science of knowledge translation and transfer. Nearly a decade and 88 projects later\, the Alliance’s KTT Funding Program has yielded a summary of leading practices and lessons learned about KTT for agri-food and rural research. In this session\, we will discuss why and how this manual was developed\, how it has been rolled out to and received by the research community\, and lessons learned for future KTT capacity building. \nThis session will be led by Shannon Brown\, Knowledge Mobilization Manager for the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance. \nRefreshments and snacks will be available. You’ll be joining us? Help us plan by registering.

SUMMARY:Concert: Tim Baker with special guests The Franklin Electric
DESCRIPTION:At the end of 2017\, twelve years after their inception\, the multi-award-winning band\, Hey Rosetta! went on hiatus\, after selling 10\,000 tickets to five farewell shows. For the band’s principal songwriter and lead vocalist Tim Baker\, this was the start of a new chapter. \nOn his debut solo album Forever Overhead\, Baker warmly welcomes you to it. The first words we hear him sing\, on the first single “Dance\,” is akin to a toast: “here’s to the other side.” What follows are eleven songs that centre on kinship and show that Baker’s sharp songwriting\, the heart of Hey Rosetta!\, is as affecting as ever. The Franklin Electric from Montreal will begin the evening. \nMore info/tickets: General Admission seating. General public tickets and U of G student tickets available. \nTim Baker has partnered with PLUS1 so that $1 from every ticket will go to organizations bringing dignity\, equity and access to communities who need it. www.plus1.org. \nPresented by UC Programming/Central Students Association/Hillside Festival/CFRU 93.3 FM

SUMMARY:2020 Derry Dialogues: One Health - Linking Human\, Animal and Environmental Wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:The Derry Dialogues\, made possible by the vision and support of Margaret and Douglas Derry\, embody the ideas and values of interdisciplinary approaches to the big issues of our time. The speakers in this annual series reflect the values of the University of Guelph and are engaged in holistic\, rigorous and interdisciplinary engagement as much in the public arena as in the academy. \nOne Health and the Derry Dialogues \nThis year\, the Derry Dialogues will focus on One Health with the objective to instill an understanding of One Health through the examples of a range of speakers from a wide variety of disciplines. The speakers will address One Health approaches to: \n\nEmerging global threats of antimicrobial resistance and infectious diseases\nWorking at the veterinary and medical interface in East Africa\nEnvironmental change due to anthropogenic early life stresses in wildlife\n\nWhat is One Health? \nOne Health is defined as a collaborative\, multisectoral and transdisciplinary approach — working at the local\, regional\, national and global levels. \nThe One Health concept recognizes the interconnection between people\, animals\, plants and their shared environment. Using a One Health approach will allow today’s researchers and thought leaders to work towards holistic\, comprehensive solutions to complex problems\, achieving optimal health outcomes for both people and animals. \nPanel Members: \nJanetrix Hellen Amuguni \nAssociate Professor | Infectious Diseases – Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University \nDr. Amuguni is a veterinarian with doctoral training in Infectious Diseases. She uses a One Health approach to investigate\, respond to\, and counter existing and future emerging infectious disease\, strengthening the public health workforce.   \nAlice Hovorka \nDean & Professor | Faculty of Environmental Studies – York University \nDr. Hovorka’s research includes animal geographies\, gender and environment\, urban geography\, and Southern Africa.  \nAmy Newman \nAssociate Professor | Department of Integrative Biology – University of Guelph \nDr. Newman is an ecophysiologist\, focusing on understanding how early life stress exposure influences physiology\, behaviour and\, ultimately\, fitness.  \nScott Weese \nProfessor | Department of Pathobiology – Director| Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses – University of Guelph \nDr. Weese is a veterinary internist and microbiologist\, dedicated to the study of infectious and zoonotic diseases\, multi-drug resistant pathogens\, and interspecies transmission of pathogens.
