SUMMARY:Seeing Ourselves in Fair Dealing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk with Meera Nair to kick-off Fair Dealing Week! \nSince entering statutory law in 1710\, the system of copyright has functioned as a set of limited rights. Said another way\, copyright has never functioned as a grant of absolute control. In this regard\, Canada enjoys a unique position in the world; our statutory limits are progressive and well-suited to fostering creativity and innovation. Among those limits\, fair dealing is of particular importance but is often portrayed as complex or beyond comprehension. Whereas\, truth be told\, fair dealing is just a collection of stories with principal characters being librarians\, teachers\, students\, creators\, researchers and readers. \nMeera Nair holds a PhD in communication\, with a research focus on systems of copyright. Currently appointed as the Copyright Officer for the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT)\, she has extensive understanding of Canadian development of exceptions to copyright. Author of the blog FairDuty she persistently argues that exceptions must be practiced in order to ensure that the rights of copyright do not impede the goals of copyright. \nMcLaughlin Library\, Room 246B

SUMMARY:SES Lunch and Learn Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:The School of Environmental Science presents the latest installment of its Lunch and Learn speaker series with Robert Bradley\, Soil Ecology Biology Department\, University of Sherbrooke\, Québec. \nBradley will speak on “Ericaceous shrubs and conifer growth check.” \nIn Boreal forests of Canada\, the growth check of conifer regeneration is often coincident with the spread of ericaceous shrubs. Bradley will summarize 25 years of research findings on this phenomenon. These studies cover a range of related topics soil as nitrogen cycling\, the biology and biochemistry of forest soils\, plant nutrient uptake strategies\, ecological disturbance and succession. He will conclude with a brief outline of silvicultural treatments that potentially mitigate or exacerbate the problem of conifer growth check. \nAlexander Hall\, Room 218

SUMMARY:Cancelled\, to Be Rescheduled: Truscott Lecture in Justice: What Does the Future of Justice Look Like?
DESCRIPTION:The College of Social and Applied Human Science presents the 2018 Truscott Lecture in Justice with guest speaker Senator Kim Pate. \nSenator Pate will present her talk “What does the future of justice look like?” addressing the future of Canada’s legal and penal system. All are welcome to attend. A reception will follow at the University Club. \n\nThe Truscott Lecture in Justice series is part of the Truscott Initiative launched at U of G in 2009 to commemorate the struggles of Guelph resident Steven Truscott and his family. \nTruscott is known across Canada for his decades-long battle to prove his innocence after the 1959 murder of his schoolmate Lynne Harper. He was wrongly convicted of the crime at age 14 and spent years in prison before his release in 1969. He was acquitted by the Ontario Court of Appeal in 2007. \nThe Truscott Initiative aims to improve understanding of the nation’s complex criminal justice system and to highlight how criminal justice intersects with other policy areas and broader conceptions of justice. \n\nRozanski Hall\, Room 102
