DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join our community memorial in honour of The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women\, where we will mourn and remember the women killed at the L’École Polytechnique in Montreal in 1989 and women killed by femicide in 2020. \nEvery year\, we take time to remember women who have died\, reflect on the dynamic of men’s violence against women that disproportionately impacts women who belong to the BIPOC and the LGBTQ2I+ communities \, and commit to our own action to end violence against women. \nU of G’s SAFE (Sexual Assault Free Environment) team will host a vigil on Zoom December 7 at 1 p.m. Registration and vigil access is available via Zoom.

DESCRIPTION:Can assisted reproductive technologies enhance livestock productivity and farm income in India? \nIndia decided to double farmers’ income by the year 2022. With just two years left for achieving the goal\, it is quite clear that achievement of this feat will be difficult without adoption and enhancement of dairy farming\, which has a compound annual growth rate of 19.6 per cent. Close to 85 per cent of the farms in India are marginal and small\, owning only 45 per cent of the land while possessing 75 per cent of the cattle. For a landless person\, dairying is one of the best occupations. The solution to the current agrarian distress rests in the support to the livestock and dairy sectors. \nThe invited panel will discuss the role and strategies of assisted reproductive technologies in enhancing livestock productivity and farmers income. \nRegister for the Assisted Reproductive Technologies and Farmers in India webinar. \nDiscussion Panel: \n\nDr. Manmohan S. Before his current appointment\, Dr. Chauhan was the Director of Central Institute for Research on Goats\, Makdoom\, Uttar Pradesh\, India.\nDr. Inderjeet Singh\, Vice Chancellor\, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University (GADVASU)\, Ludhiana\, Punjab\, India.\nDr. Inderjeet holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Veterinary sciences and Animal Husbandry from Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCSHAU)\, Hisar. He did his PhD in animal reproduction from the University of Liverpool\, UK. Before his appointment at the current institution\, Dr. Singh was the Director\, Animal Husbandry for the state of Punjab.\nDr. W. A. King\, Professor Emeritus\, Biomedical Sciences\, Ontario Veterinary College\, Guelph\, Ontario\, Canada.\nDr. King did his BSc and MSc degrees from Guelph before getting his PhD from Uppsala University\, Sweden and completed his post-doctoral tenure at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine\, Université de Montréal. Dr. King was a professor in OVC’s Department of Biomedical Sciences and held Canada’s only Tier 1 Research Chair (CRC) in Animal Reproductive Biotechnology until his retirement in 2018. He is currently the co-founder and president of Karyotekk Inc.\nDr. Pavneesh Madan\, Professor\, Biomedical Sciences\, Ontario Veterinary College\, Guelph\, Ontario\, Canada.\nDr. Madan did his DVM & MVSc from College of Veterinary Sciences\, Hisar\, India and pursued his doctoral studies at UBC\, Vancouver\, Canada. He completed his post-doctoral training at the Western University\, London\, Canada. DESCRIPTION:Thinking Spaces: The Reading Group and Speaker Series\, together with the Art Gallery of Guelph\, is pleased to present “Dispatch” a virtual talk with artist Raven Chacon and curator Candice Hopkins. \nDispatch draws from Chacon and Hopkins’ reflections on the fight for cultural preservation and defence of Indigenous sovereignty at the Standing Rock Reservation Water Protector encampment in 2016. \nThis event will take place on Zoom. A moderated Q&A will follow the talk. \nIf you are interested in attending\, please register online at https://uoguel.ph/dispatch. \nAbout the presenters \nRaven Chacon is a composer\, performer and installation artist from Fort Defiance\, Navajo Nation. As a solo artist\, collaborator or with Postcommodity\, Chacon has exhibited or performed at Whitney Biennial\, documenta 14\, REDCAT\, Musée d’art Contemporain de Montréal\, San Francisco Electronic Music Festival\, Chaco Canyon\, Ende Tymes Festival\, 18th Biennale of Sydney and The Kennedy Center. Every year\, he teaches 20 students to write string quartets for the Native American Composer Apprenticeship Project (NACAP). He is the recipient of the United States Artists fellowship in Music\, the Creative Capital award in Visual Arts\, the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation artist fellowship\, and the American Academy’s Berlin Prize for Music Composition. He lives in Albuquerque\, NM. \nCandice Hopkins is a citizen of Carcross/Tagish First Nation and lives in Albuquerque\, NM. Her writing and curatorial practice explores the intersections of history\, contemporary art and indigeneity. She works as senior curator for the 2019 and 2021 editions of the Toronto Biennial of Art and was part of the curatorial team for the Canadian Pavilion of the 58th Venice Biennale\, featuring the work of the media art collective Isuma. She is co-curator of notable exhibitions including Art for New Understanding: Native Voices 1950s to Now; the 2018 SITE Santa Fe biennial\, Casa Tomada; documenta 14 in Athens\, Greece and Kassel\, Germany; Sakahàn: International Indigenous Art at the National Gallery of Canada and Close Encounters: The Next 500 Years in Winnipeg\, MB. DESCRIPTION:Thinking Spaces: The Improvisation Reading Group and Speaker Series is pleased to present “Ethical Questioning in Research: Insight from an Applied Theatre Project\,” a virtual talk with Taiwo Afolabi. \nThis event will take place via Zoom. A moderated Q&A will follow the talk. \nIf you are interested in attending\, please register online. \nThis presentation examines ethical questioning as an inquiry process germane to making ethical choices necessarily for an ethical practice. Focusing on reflexivity through reflection-before\, in and on -action\, Afolabi considers ethical questioning as a framework to amplify resistance\, self-determination and decolonization in the process of writing and doing research. Afolabi will conclude his presentation by case studying an applied theatre project among refugees and new immigrants in Canada to investigate the implications of ethical questioning for applied theatre research and other forms of socially engaged creative practice. \nTaiwo Afolabi\, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor at the University of Regina\, Saskatchewan\, Canada. He is an applied theatre practitioner with a decade of experience working across a variety of creative and community contexts in over a dozen countries across four continents. His work centralizes around participation and ethics in community creative practice among vulnerable populations such as refugees (in Canada) and internally displaced people (in Nigeria). Through qualitative and Indigenous creative methodologies\, he examines themes of resurgence\, resistance\, self-determination and decolonization. His practice and research interests include education\, decolonization\, socially-engaged creative practice and research ethics. He is the founding artistic director of Theatre Emissary International\, Nigeria and a research associate at the University of Johannesburg\, South Africa. \nAs always\, Thinking Spaces is free and open to everyone.

The Zoom room link will be sent out a day before the event. \nThis talk will frame improvisation as a practice through which we can better understand the densities and significance of performing Indigeneity in its many forms\, including is/as an idea\, analytic and process. Bissett Perea will share examples from her in-press book Sound Relations: Native Ways of Doing Music History in Alaska (Oxford UP\, Forthcoming 2021) to demonstrate how privileging the aesthetics and logics of tribal and intertribal musicians with whom she works develops a more Native music studies\, and a more musical Native American studies. This work addresses a greater need to ask more Indigenous-led and Indigeneity-centered questions in arts and humanities research to generate transformative possibilities for more just futures locally and globally. \nJessica Bissett Perea is an interdisciplinary scholar whose work intersects the larger fields of Native American and Indigenous Studies and Music and Sound Studies. She specializes in Critical Indigenous Studies approaches to performance\, media and improvisation studies; arts and activism in North Pacific and Circumpolar Arctic communities; and relational studies of Indigenous and Black experiences and creative expressions in the Americas. She is the founding director of the Indigeneity Collaboratory\, an Indigenous-led and Indigeneity-centered research collective working to advance relational ways of being\, knowing\, and doing to generate more just futures for Indigenous communities. \nThis event is being co-presented with the University of Guelph’s Music Students’ Association during their 15th Annual Music Symposium. \nAs always\, Thinking Spaces is free and open to all.

DESCRIPTION:Some We Love\, Some We Hate\, Some We Eat: Why It’s So Hard to Think Straight About Animals\, a book by by Dr. Hal Herzog\, professor emeritus\, Western Carolina University will be discussed with Dr. Mike von Massow\, associate professor in the department of food\, agricultural and resource economics at the University of Guelph. This discussion will be a continuation of their podcast conversation\, Confessions of a conflicted omnivore. \nHerzog has been investigating the complex psychology of our interactions with other species for more than two decades. He is particularly interested in how people negotiate real-world ethical dilemmas\, and he has studied animal activists\, cockfighters\, animal researchers and circus animal trainers. An award-winning teacher and researcher\, he has written more than 100 articles and book chapters. His research has been published in journals such as Science\, The American Psychologist\, The Journal of the Royal Society\, The American Scholar\, New Scientist\, Anthrozoös\, BioScience\, The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association and Animal Behavior. His work has been covered by Newsweek\, Slate\, Salon\, National Public Radio\, Scientific American\, USA Today\, The Washington Post\, The Boston Globe\, The Chicago Tribune and many other newspapers. In 2013\, he was given the Distinguished Scholar Award by the International Society for Anthrozoology. Herzog is a professor of psychology at Western Carolina University and lives in the Smoky Mountains with his wife Mary Jean and their cat Tilly. \nVon Massow is interested in how people think about food with recent work focusing on labeling\, novel food products\, animal welfare and antibiotic use. He is also active in the interdisciplinary Guelph Food Waste Research Project with Dr. Kate Parizeau. Von Massow’s research also considers the structure and performance of food value chains as they evolve in response to changing consumer preferences and other factors. Von Massow speaks frequently about food waste\, animal welfare and other research projects. He has written for the Globe and Mail and other publications and is often quoted on radio and in the media. As a frequent blogger with a strong presence on broadcast\, print and social media\, von Massow helps contribute to the department’s ongoing efforts to mobilize research in a manner that helps to inform public policy and private strategy. Von Massow has also introduced his FoodFocus podcast to discuss issues of interest in the food space.
