SUMMARY:Lion in the Streets: A play by Judith Thompson
DESCRIPTION:Judith Thompson wrote Lion in the Streets as a delayed\, and largely unconscious response to the murder\, in 1983\, of nine-year-old Sharon Morningstar Keenan in the neighborhood in Toronto where she lives with her family.  The play initially explored moments of crisis in the lives of a diverse and changing community. Soon enough “Isobel\,” who is the ghost of a girl murdered seventeen years before the action of the play\, asserted herself and entered the play. Lion in the Streets charts Isobel’s returning to earth to hunt down her killer and take revenge. \nWritten and directed by Judith Thompson; designed by Troy Hourie. \nLion in the Streets “is so harsh that it makes you feel like you’ve been stripped\, beaten and abandoned\, and so compassionate that it releases floods of grief and gratitude with its touch.” Colin Thomas\, The Georgia Strait \nWarning: This play contains coarse language and content which may not be suitable for all members of the audience\, particularly those fourteen or under. \nNovember 10\, 15\, 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m.\nNovember 11 and 18 at 2 p.m. \nGeorge Luscombe Theatre\, MacKinnon Building

SUMMARY:How Instructional Videos Changed Teaching and Learning in an Introductory Biology Course
DESCRIPTION:U of G’s College of Biological Sciences Office of Educational Scholarship and Practice presents a special guest lecture with Peter White from Michigan State University. \nWhite discusses how instructional videos changed teaching and learning in an introductory biology course. All are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served. \nA Word from Pete:\n“My approach to teaching and learning is rooted in three main principles. First\, learning environments should be interactive and learning-centered. Second\, instruction should employ backward design\, focusing on higher-order learning outcomes. Finally\, students should be given the opportunity to engage in authentic scientific investigations\, learning science by doing science. These three principles are widely regarded as best-practice principles\, supported by a wide array of empirical studies. My pedagogical approach is geared at shrinking the divide between instructor and student.” \nSummerlee Science Complex\, Room 1511
