DESCRIPTION:Join the Arrell Food Institute in partnership with the University of Guelph One Health Institute for an event with world-renowned epidemiologist\, veterinarian and Arrell Global Food Innovation Research Award winner\, Dr. Delia Grace Randolph. \nDr. Delia Grace Randolph will discuss a journey of several decades to provide an understanding of foodborne disease and how best to manage it. Our world is not well fed and while hunger has been decreasing over the last decades\, communicable and non-communicable diseases are trending upwards. The best estimates indicate that the health burden of foodborne disease is equivalent to that of malaria\, HIV/AIDs or tuberculosis and the cost to low- and middle-income countries is more than 100 billion USD a year. Most of the global health burden of foodborne disease originates in animal source food and fresh vegetables sold in the informal\, traditional markets of developing countries. Alleviating this burden also benefits nutrition\, incomes\, equity and the environment. \nThis event will include a presentation and discussion with Dr. Delia Grace Randolph from 11 a.m. to noon followed by a light lunch from noon to 1 p.m. \nRegistration is required.

DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Chappel Lecture will be presented by Dr. Laszlo Radvanyi\, President and Scientific Director of the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR). The annual Chappel Lecture was established by 1950 OVC graduate Clifford Chappel in memory of his father\, to give students and faculty the opportunity to meet internationally known scientists. \nModulation of the Immune Response in Cancer by Retroelements and Endogenous Retroviruses: New Targets for Immunotherapy \nThis lecture will describe how otherwise silent\, non-coding regions of the human genome containing retroelements (REs) and human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) are activated in human cancer and their implications. New findings in previous work\, as well as recent work in Dr. Radvanyi’s lab and his international collaborative team\, have found that REs and HERVs are induced in multiple cancer types and can be a source of tumour antigens triggering de novo immune responses in patients that may also be harnessed as a new target for immunotherapy. On the flip-side however\, expression of these REs and HERVs in tumours can also disrupt normal immunoregulation. Recent results have found that in both pediatric and adult cancers\, aberrant transcription at pericentromeric regions of chromosomes lead to the expression and secretion of RNA from REs (including LINE\, SINE and HSAT) and HERVs in extracellular vesicles (EVs) that infect stromal cells and myeloid cells both in the tumour microenvironment and systemically in the body. These EVs are taken up by host cells driving DNA damage and induction of immunosuppressive innate inflammatory responses disrupting normal cellular differentiation and function of macrophages and dendritic cells. Thus\, these EVs seem to be long-distance\, systemic “immune disruptors” in cancer patients and alleviating this systemic immune-dysregulation may represent a new challenge and opportunity in cancer immunotherapy. \nRegister online.

The project aims to encourage members of the public to examine their assumptions about the causes of poverty by amplifying the voices of those experiencing poverty. \nUsing composite stories that highlight lived expertise and commentary from experts who work in fields related to poverty reduction\, this podcast series shines a spotlight on structural factors that shape poverty in Ontario and beyond. DESCRIPTION:Students from the University of Guelph’s History Department (College of Arts) are collecting memories about local history in the Arboretum at Guelph – and you can help by telling your story! \nExperiential Learning Students of HIST 3650 invite local community members to share stories for inclusion in an online digital archive and audio walking tour. Participants will be invited to the Arboretum to partake in a 30–45-minute interview. \nThe goal of the research project is to create an online resource of oral\, local history to create an audio walking tour for visitors to the Arboretum\, and to prepare history students for work in the public sphere. These students will be busy researching specific areas of the Arboretum and are eager to hear your personal stories throughout its 50-year history. SUMMARY:Jacobites\, Jacobins and Outlanders: Scotland in Cultural Memory
DESCRIPTION:This community event will feature presentations by faculty\, graduate students and Archival and Special Collections staff\, and is part of a wider partnership between the University of Guelph and Simon Fraser University. \nSpecial guest speaker Professor Viccy Coltman will present an exploratory and informal talk titled\, ‘Wartime: Scottish officers in military service\, 1793-1815’. \nIn the last thirty years\, the study of martial culture in Britain during the period of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars has been foregrounded in various humanities disciplines as scholars sought to reclaim academic military history with its traditional focus on campaigns\, commanders and tactics for cultural studies\, with its equivalent emphases on poems\, novels and plays. Despite the efflorescence of publications from history and English Literature\, art history has lagged behind\, and within the existing literature\, there has been no focussed study of Scottish officers and Highland regiments during this period of intense and prolonged warfare that lasted almost a quarter of a century\, or a generation. As Captain John Kincaid wrote in his Adventures in the rifle brigade in the Peninsula\, France and the Netherlands\, from 1809 to 1815\, (London\, 1830)\, ‘We had been born in war\, reared in war\, and war was our trade’. \nViccy Coltman’s work-in-progress seeks to write a cultural history of wartime which privileges Scottish commanders-in-chief of the British army including Sir Ralph Abercromby and Sir John Moore and the contributions of the 42nd\, 79th and 92nd Highland Regiments at major battles of Alexandria (1801) and Waterloo (1815). She situates a range and raft of temporalities at stake in this period and its visual and material representation\, both contemporary and posthumous. \nIn this illustrated talk\, Viccy offers an overview of her current book project\, focussing on a series of key images and objects which she has identified\, including understudied and unpublished martial portraits by Edinburgh’s leading portrait painter\, Henry Raeburn. \nViccy Coltman is a Professor of history of art at the University of Edinburgh. Her most recent book was Art and Identity in Scotland: A cultural history from the 1745 Jacobite uprising to Walter Scott\, (Cambridge\, 2019; paperback 2021). Her wartime book in preparation has been supported by fellowships from the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art and at the Anne S. K. Brown military collection at Brown University. \nRegistration is available on the event website and early registration is encouraged. The event is free and open to the public. \nThe event is supported by the Centre for Scottish Studies at the University of Guelph\, the Research Centre for Scottish Studies at Simon Fraser University and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Connections Grant program.

Mike Yost\, ISA certified arborist and certified tree worker of the University of Guelph\, will demonstrate two types of tree-climbing techniques\, single/stationary rope technique and doubled/moving rope technique. So make sure you put on your detective cap at the start of this hike! \nGuelph Urban Forest Friends (GUFF): Henry Kock Award for Tree Stewardship\nSept. 10 from noon to 1 p.m.\nWest Lawn\, Arboretum Gazebo\nThis year\, the Arboretum Expo will feature the Guelph Urban Forest Friends (GUFF): Henry Kock Award for Tree Stewardship presentation. \nPanel and Launch of Sound Walk- “How to Draw a Tree (Trees\, Mental Health\, Creativity)”\nSept. 10 from 1 to 2 p.m.\nArboretum Centre\nThis panel will be led by Dawn Matheson whose participatory art project brings individuals living with mental illnesses together with trees for a yearlong creative\, care-taking\, reciprocal engagement culminating in an immersive public sound walk. The work aims to reflect the parallel crisis of mental illness and the environmental crisis by expanding ideas around art and new media\, art practice as care\, and the interdependency between humans and our natural environment. This panel will present the site-specific sound walk on the grounds of the Arboretum\, plus the accessible web-based version created by artist Richelle Forsey. The team will also introduce the second phase of the project\, incorporating students in the How to Draw a Forest project. This event will be followed by a reciprocal tree planting on Johnston Green with Student Wellness.

DESCRIPTION:New plants and more! You’re invited to the 2022 edition of the Guelph Trial Gardens! See new perennials and annuals that plant breeders from around the world have sent us to evaluate for growth performance in southern Ontario. This weekend’s Open House is taking place on the grounds of the Guelph Turfgrass Institute at the University of Guelph. \nIn addition to new plant evaluations\, several other events will also take place. \n\nHouseplant sale and swap: Two of our student employees with a specific interest in indoor plants will be hosting a houseplant sale and swap. This will be taking place in the Frost Centre\, right beside the Trial Garden. Those interested in buying\, selling or trading indoor plants can participate in this unique event. Anyone interested in being a “vendor” can contact Olivia at pareo@uoguelph.ca. Anyone interested in increasing their plant collection is invited to simply come along and visit us (cash sales only\, please).\nMonarch butterfly rearing: A monarch butterfly rearing specialist will be on hand at the trial garden site to demonstrate her techniques and answer questions.

SUMMARY:Women in Indian Films\, Media and Beyond: Representations and Aesthetics
DESCRIPTION:With Dr. Aysha Iqbal Viswamohan\, Professor\, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences\, IIT Madras\, India. \nThe talk will explore representation of women in Indian media and what image of a contemporary Indian woman is formed in films\, over-the-top (OTT) platforms and social media\, particularly in post “MeToo” times. It will follow up on key ideas and themes discussed at the two-day online conference in 2021\, “Towards a New Vision: Women in Films\, Media & Beyond\,” which featured 20 gender studies and media studies experts. The conference was co-organized by IIT Madras and the University of Guelph with funding from the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. \nAysha Iqbal Viswamohan is a professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Madras. She works in the areas of Film Studies\, Popular Culture and American Literature. Her books include edited anthologies: Women Filmmakers in Hindi Cinema: Feminist Gaze and Beyond (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2023)\, Stardom in Contemporary Hindi Cinema: Celebrity and Fame in Globalized Times (Springer\, 2020)\, Behind the Scenes: Contemporary Bollywood Directors (Sage\, 2017) and Post-liberalization Indian Novels in English: Global Reception & Politics of Award (Anthem\, 2013). \nThis hybrid event is presented by CIRCLE\, the Canada India Research Centre for Learning and Engagement at the University of Guelph. \nAll are welcome. \nWe kindly ask in-person and virtual attendees to register to help us prepare for this event. \nLearn more online.
