SUMMARY:Intro to R and RStudio Workshop Part 2
DESCRIPTION:R is a programming language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. This workshop will introduce you to the dplyr package which makes tabular data manipulations easier by using a set of functions to extract and summarize insights from your data. The tidyr package works well with tidyr to quickly convert between different data formats (long v. wide) for graphing and analysis. \nWe highly recommend beginning with Intro to R and RStudio Part 1 as this workshop builds upon the material presented in Part 1. This is not an introductory workshop. \nPlease bring a laptop for your own use during the workshop. The laptop will need to have the latest versions of R and RStudio installed. \nPlease note: All software installation must be done before the workshop\, please ensure that you followed any account creation or software installation instructions. SUMMARY:Can Future Needs be Met Sustainably? Prof. Sir Chris Llewellyn Smith\, Oxford Physics
DESCRIPTION:U of G honorary doctorate recipient Prof. Sir Chris Llewellyn Smith\, FRS\, Oxford Physics\, presents a public talk “Can Future Needs be Met Sustainably?” \nGlobal energy consumption is increasing rapidly\, driven by rising living standards in developing countries. Decarbonisation is imperative to reduce air pollution\, rebalance relations between oil producing and importing countries and moderate climate change. However\, scenarios that meet the International Panel on Climate Change’s goal of net-zero emissions in the second half of the century all involve heroic technical\, economic and political assumptions. \nHis presentation will focus on ‘stubborn’ (especially hard to decarbonise) sectors\, which include heat\, aviation and shipping. While examining the global outlook and commenting on the situation in Canada\, he will illustrate some of the changes that total decarbonisation will require in the case of the UK.

SUMMARY:Join us for the 2019 Chappel Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Chappel Memorial Lecture presents Dr. John Hogenesch\, Ohio Eminent Scholar and Professor of Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in the Divisions of Human Genetics and Immunobiology. \n\nThe Hogenesch lab has led in research into the transcriptional outputs of the clock in animal models and humans. This work is leading to a wealth of new opportunities in circadian medicine and has spurred community contributions\, such as the public databases the Gene Atlas and Gene Wiki\, CircaDB\, and algorithms\, including JTK\, PSEA\, MetaCycle\, and CYCLOPS. \nThe Chappel Memorial Lecture was established in 1988 through an endowment by Dr. Clifford Chappel. Since that time\, internationally renowned researchers have been invited to the University of Guelph to summarize their research and career progression to inspire those engaged in\, or considering\, graduate studies in biomedical research. \nOVC Lifetime Learning Centre\, Room 1714
