DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the 25th annual Project SOY Plus finale. This year’s event will take place using HopIn software on March 26 from noon to 3 p.m. \nProject SOY (Sustainable Opportunities for You) Plus is celebrating its 25th year of providing students with a chance to express their innovative thinking into the development and marketing of plant-based products. Originally started in 1996 as Project SOY\, participants were asked to put their minds together to innovate soybean-based products. The competition has now grown to include all plant-based products. \nThe program is open to any University of Guelph student from a diploma\, undergraduate or graduate program. Students are asked to work in groups of five or fewer with a faculty advisor and then present their projects at the March 26 finale. Contestant entries are judged by industry representatives during the finale where cash rewards of $2\,500\, $1\,000 and $500 will be awarded to first\, second and third place winners\, respectively\, in three categories – diploma\, undergraduate and graduate. \nUsing the online platform\, HopIn\, multiple presentations capturing the unique plant-based creations from students will be available for viewing. DESCRIPTION:Thinking Spaces: The Reading Group and Speaker Series is pleased to present “The Concentric Fictions of a Generous History: Hypertext and Other Annotations to Memory\,” a talk by Dhruv Jani from Studio Oleomingus. \nThe event will take place on via Zoom. A moderated Q&A will follow the talk. \nRegister online. \nWith “The Concentric Fictions of a Generous History\,” I want to try to weave together a sprawling argument about interactive fiction that spans across the legacy of colonialism\, the bureaucratic tyranny of citizenship\, and the relationship of individual identity and collective histories – into contemporary political protest and the role of hypertext in the enunciation of dissent. But most of all\, I want to examine Interactive Fiction as an extension of folk-theatre where it may be possible to imagine the performance of disembodied and democratic identities without the burden of nationhood. I also want to argue why hypertext might be a precursor to a fundamental change in how bodies\, sites\, and territories are demarcated and how histories are recorded\, making forms of hypertext (including videogames) a powerful but sparsely understood site for public discourse\, protest\, and reconciliation. \nDhruv Jani is the founder of a game and arts studio called Oleomingus. Studio Oleominugs practices at the intersection of post-colonial writing\, speculative architecture and interactive fiction. They use games to study colonial power structures and the histories they occlude\, as well as how hypertext might be used to pollute a single reductive record of the past or of a people. \nThe work of Studio Oleomingus is supported by the Serendipity Arts Foundation\, Humble Bundle Inc. and The Irregular Corporation\, and we are recipients of the AMAZE Humble Award 2020. Dhruv Jani has also been a resident at Khoj International Artists Association\, and the recipient of an Arts Practice Grant from the India Foundation for the Arts. DESCRIPTION:Thinking Spaces: The Reading Group and Speaker Series is pleased to present historical musicologist Harald Kisiedu for his talk “Living Ball of Fire: Peter Brötzmann\, Black Experimentalism\, and Politics in 1960s West Germany.” \nThis event will take place via Zoom. This presentation is the last Thinking Spaces event of the semester. A moderated Q&A will follow the talk. \nIf you are interested in attending\, please register online at https://uoguel.ph/haraldkisiedu. \nA Zoom link will be sent out the day before the event. \nThis talk is concerned with the experiences and musical practices of important saxophonist and improviser Peter Brötzmann. It illuminates the creative tension between the realms of music and politics that shaped his music’s production and reception during the latter half of the 1960s and situates his work within the larger context of the rise of the New Left and the West German student protest movement during this period. Moreover\, the talk elucidates the building of alliances between segments of the West German student protest movement and the Black Freedom Movement in the US as an important backdrop for Brötzmann’s engagement with black experimentalism. \nHarald Kisiedu is a historical musicologist and received his doctorate from Columbia University. His research interests include jazz as a global phenomenon\, music of the African diaspora\, Afrodiasporic composers\, music and politics\, improvisation\, transnationalism\, and Wagner. He has published on Peter Brötzmann\, Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky\, Muhal Richard Abrams\, Black composers\, jazz and popular music in the Terezín concentration camp and the political reception of Wagner’s Meistersinger of Nuremberg in the National Socialist Regime. He is also a saxophonist and has performed with George Lewis\, Branford Marsalis\, Henry Grimes\, Hannibal Lokumbe and Champion Jack Dupree. He has made recordings with the NY-based ensemble Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber and composer/improviser Jeff Morris. \nBetween 2015 and 2017\, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation at the University of Guelph and at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Kisiedu is currently a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück’s Institute of Music. He is the author of European Echoes: Jazz Experimentalism in Germany\, 1950-1975 published by Wolke Verlag. \nAs always\, Thinking Spaces is free and open to all.

Although the ability to successfully modernize an organization in our fast-paced\, rapidly changing world is essential\, most small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)\, which make up over 98% of total businesses across the world and are a large contribution to value added and employment\, are lacking any will and/or capacity to evolve\, with most of them still following old business styles. Additionally\, minorities\, such as immigrants\, women\, BIPOC and LGBTQ2+ communities\, etc.\, face relatively more barriers while exploring business opportunities. \nIn this backdrop\, the University of Guelph Humber is pleased to host an international applied business conference on the evolution of small and medium enterprises. The conference will be held virtually on Zoom May 6 – 7\, 2021. \nThis conference aims at bringing together academic scholars\, researchers\, entrepreneurs\, policy makers and students from around the globe for an opportunity to present case studies and discuss applied research papers\, as well as to foster research collaborations. It will be an international gathering where participants will explore possible ways for businesses to succeed in this continuously evolving and fast paced environment\, while learning from successful case studies from various parts of the world and contributing to open innovation. These public lectures\, aimed at a general audience\, will encourage us to consider how the artistic practices of improvisation developed by creative practitioners can translate into broader spheres of influence and action. Improvisational practices can put pressure on unquestioned assumptions\, help us discover new ways of being\, and put into action potential solutions to some of our most pressing contemporary global challenges. \nDescribed by The New York Times as a “social conscience\, multimedia collaborator\, system builder\, rhapsodist\, historical thinker and multicultural gateway\,” Vijay Iyer has carved out a unique path as a shape-shifting presence in 21st century music. His musical language is grounded in the rhythmic traditions of South Asia and West Africa\, the African American creative music movement of the 60s and 70s\, and the lineage of composer-pianists from Duke Ellington to Alice Coltrane. He has received a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award\, a United States Artist Fellowship and a Grammy nomination; released twenty-four albums\, most recently Uneasy (ECM Records\, 2021); received commissions from Brentano Quartet\, Imani Winds\, Bang on a Can All-Stars\, The Silk Road Ensemble\, and the LA Philharmonic; and has recently served as composer-in-residence at London’s Wigmore Hall and artist-in-residence at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. He is Franklin D. and Florence Rosenblatt Professor of the Arts at Harvard University. \nFred Moten is a cultural theorist and poet creating new conceptual spaces that accommodate emergent forms of Black cultural production\, aesthetics and social life. A professor at the Tisch School of the Arts\, NYU\, he has spent the last thirty years crafting illuminating work focusing on social movement\, aesthetic experiment and the poetics of Black study. He has expressed these ideas through Moved by the Motion\, the Center for Convivial Research and Autonomy\, and the Exodus Reading Group; via collaborations with Arika\, Renee Gladman\, Zun Lee\, Jennie C. Jones\, Renée Green\, and George Lewis\, among many others; and in a number of books\, the latest of which\, written with Stefano Harney\, is All Incomplete (Minor Compositions/Autonomedia\, 2021).

She is conducting archival and on-site research for her new book Seeing the Forest for the Trees: Trees as Participants in Theatre and Performance (McGill-Queen’s University Press). Using a theatre and performance lens\, her research monograph explores the relations we already have with trees – in lived and mediated encounters – and how we can aim to build better ones. Readers will be pushed to reconsider the ubiquitous yet overlooked tree\, and thereby the nonhuman world more generally\, through new theoretical frameworks.
