SUMMARY:ONLINE: Dislocation and Lost Identity in 'Beatrice and Croc Harry': A Conversation with Lawrence Hill
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually for a conversation with Chioma Nwebube\, 4th year student\, former president of the Guelph Black Students Association\, and member of the President’s Anti-Racism Advisory Committee and Lawrence Hill\, author and professor of creative writing in the School of English and Theatre Studies. \nLawrence Hill is an award-winning and internationally bestselling author of eleven books of fiction and nonfiction\, including The Book of Negroes and The Illegal\, both of which won CBC Canada Reads. Hill is the winner of the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize\, the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book\, and both CBC Radio’s Canada Reads and Radio-Canada’s Combat des livres. He helped to create and has chaired Gryphons Read\, the University’s common reading program. Last year\, he initiated a third-year creative writing course which he taught (to students and to prisoners\, together) in the Grand Valley Institution for Women\, a federal penitentiary in Kitchener. Much of his volunteer work has been of service to Black communities\, through groups such as the Black Loyalist Heritage Society\, the Ontario Black History Society\, The Writers’ Union of Canada\, The University of Toronto Schools\, and Crossroads International\, for which he remains an honorary patron. \nHill’s most recent book\, Beatrice and Croc Harry published by Harper Collins\, has been described as “A book to treasure and share across generations” (David Chariandy)\, and “A journey of epic proportions” (Nadia L. In a 90-minute zoooooom between word plays\, drawing\, mirroring\, movement\, and improvisation\, you may be inspired to reconsider the prism through which you look at yourself and this world. \nCatharine is co-founder of WHAT IIIF? festival that asks the absurd question\, “Can improvisation be documented?” She animates a weekly improvisation practice via Zoom. She also contributes a monthly “Letter to my Original Geography” for IICSI’s ImprovNotes. \nTrained as an economist and diplomat\, her life has taken many turns\, and it’s often better when she stands on her head. She writes a letter daily and she is a contributor to the German still paper annual magazine Improfil\, Critical Correspondence\, and the Journal of Embodied Research. I want to be free and then i hear the tropes i hear so often and it’s me\, my voice. I want to be free and yet somewhat paradoxically\, i need to be tied up in rules to experience freedom\, to break free of the invisible limits to my expression. I spy those ceteris paribus clauses in the world of free improv though. I can see that they are super packed\, the contents all pressed and folded with such precision that it’s actually staggering when you see how much they managed to fit in there. So\, how free is free anyway? \nMore about Aruna\nAruna Antonella Handa creates theatre\, music and performance art\, exploring the nexus of social justice\, environmental and intimate themes. Her work investigates fault lines between composed and improvised\, personal and social\, addictive and temperate\, artist and audience\, here and somewhere there. Salonnière of the Future Food Salon\, Aruna plans to launch the third series in Guelph at the Arboretum in late 2022 (Covid Mist Date: late 2023). A five-act immersive musical comedy\, Voyage to Anthropocene will explore the third kingdom of life: Fungi. Previous series which toured Toronto\, New York\, Austin and Montreal explored edible insects. With ensembles and as a solo artist\, Aruna has performed in Canada and the US at festivals and venues including the Mariposa Folk Festival\, Tarragon Spring Festival\, Nuit Blanche Toronto\, Canadian Music Week\, the Monarch Club\, and the Tranzac in Toronto. This year\, Aruna & the Sirens\, will release the LP Of Bones & Addicts\, and two singles including “City Hotel” which chronicles racist attacks in Ontario following the Trump electoral victory. Extending the work on gender-based violence she began with Have You Seen My Sister?\, which launched at Nuit Blanche in 2017\, Aruna addresses what the UN has labelled the ‘shadow pandemic’\, the global surge in domestic violence\, with a series of live performances of her song cycle\, and the release of a single recorded in socially distanced ways with musicians from across Canada and the US. DESCRIPTION:After months of work\, student teams involved in the 2021-2022 Project SOY Plus competition are ready to showcase their creative and potentially industry-altering plant-based products. Contestant entries will be open for viewing by the public and judged by industry representatives. Cash rewards of $2\,500\, $1\,000 and $500 will be awarded to first\, second and third place\, respectively in three categories. \nInitially introduced in 1996\, Project Soy served as a way to help maintain the momentum of the soybean industry\, raise the production and awareness of the crop\, and find diversified uses and markets for soybeans. Since then\, the program has expanded into Project SOY Plus and now includes a wide variety of plant-based products with the ultimate goal of making a positive and lasting impact on the environment. \nThe Project SOY Plus Finale takes in the University Centre on Friday\, March 25 with an open house to showcase projects from 10 a.m. until noon and an awards announcement between 12:30-1 p.m. The event is free to attend.

A Zoom link will be sent the day before the event. \nFestival studies has become a vital and growing field of research that draws insights from cultural studies\, music\, sociology\, anthropology\, ecology\, geography and history\, among others. It has arguably emerged as a discipline in its own right. The socio-musicologist Simon Frith pertinently notes that “Festivals seem to attract more academic attention across more disciplines than any other popular music topic.” Drawing on their histories of involvement as festival organizers and researchers\, Ellen Waterman and Ajay Heble will engage one another in conversation about the opportunities and challenges that music festivals can offer to our understanding of how\, where and why we (as artists\, academics and arts presenters) do our work. In light of recent international crises – the COVID-19 pandemic\, protests against racialized violence\, ecological degradations spurred by climate change\, sustained threats to democratic governance – might festivals play a role in positioning us to respond to the social\, political\, and ecological threats we face\, and to meet the challenges\, and the unknowns\, of the future? Please join us for this session about the role that music festivals can play in our current moment. \nBiographies \nEllen Waterman is professor in the School for Studies in Art and Culture and holds the Helmut Kallmann Chair for Music in Canada at Carleton University. She is both a music scholar and a flutist specializing in creative improvisation. With Gillian Siddall\, she is co-editor of Negotiated Moments: Improvisation\, Sound\, and Subjectivity (Duke). Ellen is founder and director of the Research Centre for Music\, Sound\, and Society in Canada\, dedicated to exploring the complex and diverse roles that music and sonic arts play in shaping Canadian society. Between 2003 and 2019\, Ellen conducted a cross-Canada comparative research project on experimental music festivals. Currently\, she is the primary investigator for two collaborative research-creation projects on themes of accessibility and equity funded by the SSHRC and the Canada Council for the Arts. \nAjay Heble is the founding Director of the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI)\, and professor of English in the School of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph. His research has covered a full range of topics in the arts and humanities and has resulted in 15 books published or in press\, numerous articles or chapters\, and over 100 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows trained and mentored. He was the founding Artistic Director of the award-winning Guelph Jazz Festival and Colloquium (he served in that capacity for 23 years\, retiring in 2016)\, and is a founding co-editor of the peer-reviewed journal Critical Studies in Improvisation/Études critiques en improvisation. Dr. Heble is the recipient of numerous awards\, including the 2016 SSHRC Impact Award in the Partnership category\, the 2014 Dr. Winegard Exemplary Volunteer Award\, and a Teaching Excellence Award from the Student Senate Caucus at the University of Guelph. SUMMARY:RBC Training Ground Olympic Talent Search
DESCRIPTION:The RBC Training Ground Olympic talent search\, with scouts from nine Olympic sports\, is holding a free event in Guelph for the first time ever. \nNow entering its seventh year\, RBC Training Ground has already found and funded seven Canadian Olympic medallists\, and put hundreds more into Canada’s Olympic talent pipeline. \nOn Sunday April 24\, area athletes are invited to see if they might be suited for an Olympic sport\, even one they’ve never considered\, and potentially earn funding for their own Olympic journey. At each qualifying event participants will perform speed\, strength\, power and endurance benchmark testing in front of National Sport Organizations \nIn year six of the program University of Guelph student Talia Hoffman was identified through the talent search and awarded Future Olympian funding by Rugby Canada. \nThe Guelph event is one of 14 happening across the country this Spring. \nThe top 100 athletes will be selected to compete in the RBC Training Ground National Final\, and potentially earn funding support as an RBC Future Olympian. The National Final will take place in a time and format that places the utmost priority on the healthy and safety of participants. \nWHEN AND WHERE: On Sunday April 24\, this FREE opportunity  for  any local athlete (14-25) comes to the University of Guelph’s Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre\, 175 Reynolds Walk\, in Guelph. The event will run from 9 am.. to approximately noon. \nLocal athletes are encouraged to register at RBCTrainingground.ca and have the chance to meet and show their core speed\, power\, strength and endurance to Olympic talent scouts from nine different sports.
