DESCRIPTION:The Psychology Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion Task Force at the University of Guelph is hosting a recruitment event targeted toward BIPOC and 1st-generation undergraduate students who are considering applying to graduate school in psychology (for eligibility\, see below). Our goal is to help prepare prospective graduate students for the application process and life as a graduate student. \nWho is eligible?\nThe University of Guelph is committed to equity\, diversity\, and inclusion within our organization and within Canada more broadly. We recognize that certain groups are underrepresented in advanced degree programs\, including BIPOC and 1st-generation students. These individuals may have access to less information about graduate school than their colleagues from more advantaged backgrounds through family members\, social circles\, etc. While we encourage all students who feel they could benefit from this event to attend\, we ask you to be mindful that this event is geared toward students from underrepresented groups. Enrollment priority will be given to BIPOC and 1st-generation students. \nHow to Register\nRegistration is FREE. Spaces are limited so please register online. You will be asked to complete a short survey to help us prepare panelists for your questions and inform which components of the graduate school application we should focus on for the workshop. Following registration\, we will be able to send you the link to our Zoom event via email. \nItinerary \nPanel session (2 to 3:30 p.m.)\nOur panel session features three BIPOC scholars who will share their personal experiences of graduate school: the application process\, the training they received\, the challenges and opportunities they’ve encountered and their current career path. Following their presentations\, we will open the floor to questions from the audience. \nPanel Q&A (3:30 to 3:50 p.m.) \nBreak (3:50 to 4 p.m.) \nBreakout sessions (4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.) \n\nWorkshop on how to make a competitive grad school application (4 to 4:45 p.m.)\nAttendees will have the opportunity to participate in one of two workshops focusing on different components of the application (e.g.\, writing a statement of interest\, scholarship applications\, structuring your CV\, etc). Workshop topics will be decided based on interest demonstrated in the registration survey.\n Networking/ Q&A with current graduate students (4:45 to 5:30 p.m.)\nThis section of the event is area specific. A moderated Q&A will follow the talk. \nIf you are interested in attending\, please register online. \n“Time To Plant Seed”: Now\, we all know that the world and music environment won’t be the same after the pandemic. Perhaps we have to define it as a crisis for musicians and performers. However\, I’d suggest we pursue the value of improvisation in times of desperation. It’s like when farmers lose their harvest for some reason; they always go back to the stage of planting a seed. I believe that improvisation becomes more valuable in times of crisis because it always leads us to the most essential elements of artistry and humanity. We can start over from there. We have each other and technologies to keep us contacted. – Dong-Won Kim \nDong-Won Kim has studied the traditional music of the Korean masters and works to introduce the world to the beauty of Korean traditional culture and music via his participation in numerous intercultural projects. He has performed across the globe\, most prominently as a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. Kim is a music professor\, teaching online through Wonkwang Digital University in Korea. In 2001\, he wrote the fairy tale “Story of Salmunori\,” and he features in the music documentary Intangible Asset Number 82 (2009). An activist\, he was incarcerated as a political prisoner in 1987 after being part of an “illegal assembly” for the funeral of a young victim of police violence. \nAs always\, Thinking Spaces is free and open to all. As we navigate a global pandemic that disproportionately impacts Black communities across the province\, we are asked to justify our calls for culturally responsive resources. We are told that we do not have sufficient proof that our bodies are those primarily on the frontlines. And when we call for race-based data collection to prove what we all know is true\, our request is denied\, implemented only voluntarily in public health units that may see value in protecting our lives. These are only some examples of what anti-Blackness looks like in Ontario in 2021. And this is why Black leadership matters. DESCRIPTION:Can assisted reproductive technologies enhance livestock productivity and farm income in India? \nIndia decided to double farmers’ income by the year 2022. With just two years left for achieving the goal\, it is quite clear that achievement of this feat will be difficult without adoption and enhancement of dairy farming\, which has a compound annual growth rate of 19.6 per cent. Close to 85 per cent of the farms in India are marginal and small\, owning only 45 per cent of the land while possessing 75 per cent of the cattle. For a landless person\, dairying is one of the best occupations. The solution to the current agrarian distress rests in the support to the livestock and dairy sectors. \nThe invited panel will discuss the role and strategies of assisted reproductive technologies in enhancing livestock productivity and farmers income. \nRegister for the Assisted Reproductive Technologies and Farmers in India webinar. \nDiscussion Panel: \n\nDr. Manmohan S. He did his PhD in animal reproduction from the University of Liverpool\, UK. Before his appointment at the current institution\, Dr. Singh was the Director\, Animal Husbandry for the state of Punjab.\nDr. W. A. King\, Professor Emeritus\, Biomedical Sciences\, Ontario Veterinary College\, Guelph\, Ontario\, Canada.\nDr. King did his BSc and MSc degrees from Guelph before getting his PhD from Uppsala University\, Sweden and completed his post-doctoral tenure at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine\, Université de Montréal. Dr. King was a professor in OVC’s Department of Biomedical Sciences and held Canada’s only Tier 1 Research Chair (CRC) in Animal Reproductive Biotechnology until his retirement in 2018. He is currently the co-founder and president of Karyotekk Inc.\nDr. Pavneesh Madan\, Professor\, Biomedical Sciences\, Ontario Veterinary College\, Guelph\, Ontario\, Canada.\nDr. Madan did his DVM & MVSc from College of Veterinary Sciences\, Hisar\, India and pursued his doctoral studies at UBC\, Vancouver\, Canada. He completed his post-doctoral training at the Western University\, London\, Canada. Dr. Madan is an award-winning researcher and teacher\, with research interests in the area of assisted reproduction\, metabolomics\, gene inhibition\, genetic manipulation\, cloning and in developing markers for embryonic health.\n\nPresented by the Canada India Research Centre for Learning and Engagement.
