SUMMARY:S2 Speaker Series: Data\, Storytelling and Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:The S2 Speaker Series brings together people from different fields to explore and discuss the world of digital scholarship through a variety of perspectives. Every talk will be different but the connecting piece is the use of digital tools in some capacity.  \nThis talk will challenge you to think about the intersections of data and social justice. How can data be used to tell stories about injustice and help make the case for change? How do today’s state and corporate data systems perpetuate systemic inequities? How does our relationship with data change as a function of our social position and privilege? This talk will explore these questions and present some case studies and examples for each. \nMcLaughlin Library\, Room 289

SUMMARY:Hopper Lecture: Patricia Romero-Lankao
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Hopper Lecture “Sustainable Cities: Enhancing Sustainable Transitions Through an Understanding of Risk” presented by Professor Patricia Romero-Lankao. \nUrban areas can play a key role in the transformations that are required in humankind’s ways of understanding and responding to climate and sustainability challenges. Fulfilling this role\, however\, will require bringing together urban planners\, social and physical scientists\, business leaders\, engineers\, and others representing diverse knowledge and power domains. Such an undertaking creates its own set of seemingly intractable complications. This presentation begins with a brief description of the current state of an interdisciplinary understanding of how climate and urbanization contribute to intra- and interurban inequalities in risk. It will then examine across global to local scales\, how urban areas\, as places with unique social\, institutional and environmental histories\, shape risk. It will close with some remarks on how urban actors might enhance the capacity of urban populations to mitigate risk and adapt in fair and sustainable ways. \nPaty Romero-Lankao has a joint appoint as a Senior Research Scientist at the Transportation and Hydrogen Systems Center of National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the University of Chicago’s Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation. \nRozanski Hall\, Room 102

SUMMARY:Data Skills Workshops: Data Visualization - GIS
DESCRIPTION:ArcGIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS) – a software program for working with maps and geographic data. A GIS allows you to work with any data that you know a location for (e.g.\, addresses\, latitude and longitude\, census locations\, name of a place\, etc.). ArcGIS is available on all the Library computers\, also by download to the University community. Although similar in some ways to online mapping sites\, ArcGIS has greater analytical capabilities and allows you more input and control over your map. We’ll learn some GIS fundamentals and how to get started using ArcGIS. \nIn this workshop we will learn how to navigate ArcMap\, kinds of GIS data\, how to add data to a map\, basic symbology and labeling\, how to filter data\, and how to calculate new data and map it. \nMcLaughlin Library\, Room 032
