SUMMARY:Welfare Concerns for Veal Calves: Housing\, Nutrition\, Antimicrobials and Disease Detection
DESCRIPTION:CCSAW Animal Behaviour and Welfare Seminar: Welfare Concerns for Veal Calves: Housing\, Nutrition\, Antimicrobials and Disease Detection by Bart Pardon\, Ghent University. \nIn Europe\, the veal industry was currently criticized for its very intensive antimicrobial use and high level of antimicrobial resistance. Rationally reducing antimicrobial use in the contemporary veal industry\, which inherently holds transport and co-mingling of animals at young age\, is a huge challenge. However\, in Belgium\, reductions of 50 per cent (total use) and 75 per cent (critically important antimicrobials) are requested by 2020. Simultaneously\, the industry must remain attentive to a growing concern for animal welfare in food animals. \nThis talk will provide an overview of how this pressure on antimicrobial consumption can be used as a momentum to improve veal calf welfare. \nOVC Pathobiology AHL\, Room 1800

SUMMARY:Selecting a First Telescope for Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:Make exploring the night sky a little less intimidating and a lot more exciting! The first two hours of this presentation will introduce the most common types of telescopes\, what they do\, how they do it\, and what you can expect to see. Some of the challenges to stargazing will be discussed\, such as light pollution and an unfamiliarity with the night sky\, and how these obstacles might be overcome. In the third hour\, participants will be invited to look at – and through – a selection of small telescopes to see what each of these instruments can do. \nGuest instructor: Trevor Chandler \nRegister by Nov. 15 to take advantage of our $55 early bird fee. After Nov. 15\, registration is $65 per person. Maximum 30 adults. \nNote: If we don’t have enough registrations by the early bird deadline the course may be cancelled.
