DESCRIPTION:Why not take your birding to the next level? Join Chris Earley\, Arboretum Interpretive Biologist and author of 5 bird field guides\, for a series of eight virtual noon-hour lectures on eight different bird groups. ID techniques\, field marks\, shapes\, behaviour clues and more will all be covered. \nEach course will finish with a 10 – 15 minute discussion period so you can ask all your bird-related questions. All eight programs cost $70 (plus tax) – that’s less than $10 per program! Bird groups covered include: Hawks\, Ducks\, Sparrows\, Sandpipers\, Gulls\, Spring Warblers\, Fall Warblers and Spring Migrants (presentation dates listed below). Recordings of each will be sent to all participants the next day. The recordings will be available for one month after the last program. \nMondays and Wednesdays\, November 4\, 6\, 11\, 13\, 18\, 20\, 25\, and 27\, 2024\nNoon to 1 p.m.

SUMMARY:Breaking knowledge hegemony through transdisciplinary research practice
DESCRIPTION:Marsha Hinds Myrie will be presenting the next One Health seminar on Wednesday\, November 13. Marsha is an Educational Developer\, Anti-oppressive and Inclusive Pedagogies in the Office of Teaching and Learning at the University of Guelph. \nMarsha Hinds Myrie’s life and work are an embodiment of dualities and intersections. She is a Barbadian/Canadian citizen with an ancestral\, cultural\, and intellectual home in Africa. Her career unfolds\, sometimes spectacularly and sometimes confusingly\, at the intersections of activism and education. She is a public intellectual steeped in the Caribbean intellectual tradition and critical studies. \nMarsha spent 23 years developing an advocacy model to address the issues of underprivileged groups of women in Barbados and the Commonwealth Caribbean. The major focus of the work is to develop and encourage the use of victim-defined services for women and girls affected by various types of gender-based violence while at the same time removing the burden of eradicating violence from women and victims by forcing greater attention to systemic oppression and a stronger lobby in policy spaces.

SUMMARY:On Cuddling: Loved to Death in the Racial Embrace—Reading and Conversation with Dr. Phanuel Antwi (UBC)
DESCRIPTION:Ranging from the terrifying embrace of the slave ship’s hold to the racist encoding of ‘cuddly’ toys\, On Cuddling is a unique combination of essay and poetry that contends with the way racial violence is enacted through intimacy. Informed by Black feminist and queer poetics\, Antwi focuses his lens on the suffering of Black people at the hands of state violence and racial capitalism. As radical movements grow to advance Black liberation\, so too must our ways of understanding how racial capitalism embraces us all. Antwi turns to cuddling\, an act we imagine as devoid of violence\, and explores it as a tense transfer point of power. \nDr. Phanuel Antwi is the Canada Research Chair in Black Arts and Epistemologies in the Department of English Language and Literatures at the University of British Columbia. He is an artist\, teacher and organizer concerned with race\, poetics\, movements\, intimacy\, and struggle. He works with text\, dance\, film\, and photography to intervene in artistic\, academic\, and public spaces. He is a curator\, activist\, and associate professor. DESCRIPTION:What are English Language Workshops: Everyday Writing?\nThis five-part program provides support in academic written communication for graduate-level students who speak English as an Additional Language (EAL). This program provides students an opportunity to improve their writing in typical academic and professional scenarios. The scenarios include: \n\nWriting emails to professors and/or advisors\nProviding written feedback to students as TAs\nAvoiding plagiarism\nWriting abstracts for academic audiences\nWriting cover letters to potential employers\n\nThis program is divided into five workshops that run over three weeks. Each workshop is two hours in length. This program is offered only in the Fall semester. \nAre these workshops for you?\n\nAre you a graduate student\, postdoctoral fellow\, or visiting scholar who speaks English as an Additional Language?\nWould you like to develop your confidence and skills in academic writing\nWould you like a safe place to practice and develop writing strategies for a variety of academic contexts?\n\nIf you answered yes to these questions\, then this program is for you! \nWhat can you expect as a participant?\n\nParticipants will engage in discussions around the challenges and strategies for successfully writing emails to advisors and professors; feedback to students (as TAs); paraphrases; abstracts; and cover letters.\nParticipants will engage in practice activities that will allow them to learn and practice written communication skills and strategies as they apply to these academic and professional scenarios.\nStudents will brainstorm and develop language and vocabulary that can be used in these writing tasks.\n\nWho can attend?\nThis program accepts registrations from U of G graduate students\, postdoctoral fellows\, or visiting scholars who speak English as an Additional Language (EAL). DESCRIPTION:The Bigger Picture Series is the Wood Centre’s Flagship event where we bring guest speakers to campus to tackle challenges or innovative topics within industry to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs. This semester\, we are diving into the topic of Indigenous Entrepreneurship. For the workshop component\, we will be creating custom dot-art based on Métis floral beadwork patterns fused with drawing inspiration from plant relations. This workshop will be led by Marissa Magneson. All materials will be provided for the workshop. \nStudents are also welcome to stay after the workshop into the evening\, which will feature a keynote presentation by Jenn Harper\, founder of Cheekbone Beauty. Jenn will share her journey in building a cosmetic company focused on representation and inclusion.
